As a design editor for over a decade, I’ve sat on my fair share of amazing sofas: the graceful curves of Vladimir Kagan Serpentine, the polarizing Togo, the colorfully patchworked Roche Bobois Mah Jong, and many more. In my own home, more budget-friendly sofas have paraded through and been put to the test by myself (discerning eye), my husband (discerning comfort), my daughter (discerning durability), and my cats (unclear what their criteria is but, rest assured, they are very discerning). Most recently, I have tested Sundays Movie Night Sofa in my own home for several weeks now, and it has held up to everyone's standards.

The Movie Night collection is Sundays’ bestselling line and for good reason. Slouchy, oversized, and smothered in fluffy pillows, it is peak coziness and reminiscent of RH’s cult-favorite Cloud Sofa. However, like many direct-to-consumer brands without brick and mortars, the Movie Night Sofa has a lower price point, ranging from about $2,400 to $6,820.

My first impression of the sofa is that due to the amount of fluffy pillows, it feels much larger than its true dimensions in the space compared to a trim, tufted number. I really liked that cushions can be flipped, and covers can be removed and washed—many less-expensive sofas have fixed cushions and/or covers that cannot be removed for cleaning. Most importantly, everyone in my family finds this sofa ridiculously comfortable, despite our various sizes of tall, short, baby, and cat. In fact, one of my cats is now visibly annoyed whenever I sit on our other sofa instead of the Movie Night and she has to choose between cuddles with me or her new favorite spot.

True to its name, it really is the perfect place to watch movies, read a book, or snuggle in with your family and friends. I would highly recommend it for anyone’s den or family room. However, the drawback to all that comfort and high fill, is that if you entertain a lot and want your living room to feel polished, this doesn’t exactly check that box. There are no wrong answers to what type of seating is best, but consider the Movie Night sofa if your style leans more Friends than Bridgerton.

Delivery and Install

To be honest, even though my sofa was installed recently, I had already forgotten about the delivery altogether—that is how painless it was. Sundays offers complimentary delivery on all of its items; for its sofas and sectionals they also offer free set up and packaging removal. It’s truly a breeze.

Features and Specs

The Movie Night collection offers so many options, from a single armless chair (45"W x 45 "D x 32"H) that you could pair with a corner chair (38"W x 38 "D x 32"H) for tight spaces, to a sprawling six-piece modular sofa (180"W x 90 "D x 32"H) with every combination you could want in between. The large version of the pieces has a seat depth of 36 inches and the standard has a seat depth of 30 inches, both of which are an average sofa depth. The soft cushions give it the illusion of extra depth. As a bonus, the deeper version can easily double as a bed for guests or impromptu naps.

Price

The cheapest unit, a single corner chair, starts at $1,260 but to be honest, this would be an odd purchase to make on its own. More realistically, a two-seat sofa starts at $2,400, their bestseller, a 4-seat modular sectional is starts at $4,670 and a sprawling 6-seat starts at $6,820. Due to customization, there isn’t an exact a one-to-one comparison, but prices are approximate to West Elm, Sixpenny, and Pottery Barn.

Pros

  • Fully washable cover

  • Modular pieces can be re-arranged or added to over time

  • Comfortable

  • The large-style sofa can double as a bed

  • Delivery is free and seamless

Cons

  • The very casual, squishy design may look out of place in more-formal rooms

  • The fluffiness makes this a monolithic shape—this is a large piece of furniture

  • Soft fill means there will be indents when people move around or get up

  • Sundays does not have a brick-and-mortar showroom where you can try the furniture before buying

  • Your cat may pick the sofa over you

Final Thoughts

The Sundays Movie Night sofa is a great, quality piece and is more functional and comfortable than other styles for its price point. It’s comfortable and perfect for lounging with friends and family—everyone gravitates toward it. Plus, it’s easy to clean and durable so if movie night gets a little sloppy (hi, red wine and chocolate ice cream), you’ll be able to get it back to pristine condition in no time.
