Denver Zoo Welcomes Adorable Endangered Sumatran Orangutan Baby

A birth is always a joyous occasion, especially when it's of a critically endangered animal. On August 30, The Denver Zoo announced that their Sumatran Orangutan named Eirina gave birth to a baby on Sunday, August 27th.

The little orangutan is believed to be a baby girl.

We will never get over the way mama orangutans gaze at their infants with so much love, just like human moms do.

Female orangutans have very strong bonds with their babies, and young orangutans stay with their mother until they reach around 7 years old. They spend this time learning everything from her – including what’s good to eat. Infants are so attached to their moms that they ride on her body and sleep in her nest until they develop their own skills to survive on their own.

The baby doesn't have a name yet, but that hasn't stopped everyone from falling in love with the little primate. @Cynthia comments, "Fantastic pictures! I am so very happy to hear this news...congrats to you all! This baby is so very precious and absolutely adorable! Eirina looks like she will be an excellent Mother. I can't wait to hear who the Father is!" @Mike adds, "Great photos! This makes my heart sing! Can't wait to see them in person."

Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered with only about 9,200 left in the wild. The main reason for their endangered status is habitat loss. The zoo says this is such a win for conservation to have the baby born.

The Denver Zoo has set up a baby registry to help support this little one. These donations fund well-baby exams, treats for mom and dad and a nutrition plan for the little one. You can show your support by visiting the website here.
