Members of The Squad—the group of progressive Congresswomen including Cori Bush, Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and more—are taking action after a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. this afternoon to protest the president's loss in the 2020 election.
"I believe the Republican members of Congress who have incited this domestic terror attack through their attempts to overturn the election must face consequences," tweeted Representative Cori Bush of Missouri, a Black Lives Matter organizer who was elected to Congress in the fall. Calling for the expulsion of "Republican members of Congress who have incited this domestic terror attack through their attempts to overturn the election must face consequences," Bush reiterated the same sentiment from her personal account.
I believe the Republican members of Congress who have incited this domestic terror attack through their attempts to overturn the election must face consequences. They have broken their sacred Oath of Office.
I will be introducing a resolution calling for their expulsion. pic.twitter.com/JMTlQ4IfnR— Congresswoman Cori Bush (@RepCori) January 6, 2021
She also pressed her colleagues to take ownership.
I want a public response from each and every one of my Republican colleagues: do you think this is ok?

Rep. Ilhan Omar tweeted that she's taking steps to impeach Donald Trump, who is in his final days of presidency. "I am drawing up Articles of Impeachment," she wrote. "Donald J. Trump should be impeached by the House of Representatives & removed from office by the United States Senate. We can’t allow him to remain in office, it’s a matter of preserving our Republic and we need to fulfill our oath."

Omar added, "Rest assured, this day will not end without us finishing the work Congress is supposed to carry out. We will not let our Constitution be trampled on by a mob and threaten by a tyrant. Democracy will prevail."
Rep. Ayanna Pressley took a similar stance. "Donald J. Trump should immediately be impeached by the House of Representatives & removed from office by the United States Senate as soon as Congress reconvenes," the Congresswoman from Massachusetts tweeted. "This is dangerous & unacceptable."

Michigan's Rep. Rashida Tlaib wrote "This is on Donald Trump, period. He called folks to D.C. and gave them marching orders. He needs to be impeached and removed immediately."

After being barricaded in the Capitol for several hours, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York also spoke out on Twitter. "For now, we must focus on task at hand: to preserve the integrity of our democracy, hold accountable those responsible for their attempts to subvert our nation’s elections and shred our Constitution apart," she wrote.
She, too, called for Trump's impeachment, in a very succinct tweet.
Impeach.

While the madness unfolded in D.C., Trump responded on Twitter by asking the mob to "remain peaceful" and refrain from violence. He followed up in pre-recorded video—which Twitter has flagged for having a "risk of violence"—where he called his supporters "very special" and told them, "We love you." The video has since been removed from social media and Twitter has suspended Trump's account for 12 hours.
