Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore and Bruce Willis

Demi Moore has been famous for virtually her entire adult life, and her personal life has been the subject of public fascination for just as long. Moore got married for the first time in 1980 when she was still a teenager and still finding her footing in Hollywood. By the time her first marriage ended, however, she was a star—and her relationships became the stuff of tabloid legend.

As Moore’s star was rising in the mid-1980s thanks to St. Elmo’s Fire, she dated costar Emilio Estevez, who was experiencing his own burst of fame. After their engagement imploded, Moore moved on with Bruce Willis, who became her second husband. The duo started dating within weeks of their first meeting. Moore later said that they hit it off so quickly because Willis was “just so ready to embrace and give me love.”

Following her 2000 divorce from Willis, Moore started dating Ashton Kutcher. That romance also attracted a ton of public interest, in part because of the couple’s 15-year age gap. In her 2019 memoir, Inside Out, Moore said their relationship felt like a “do-over” for her, “like I could just go back in time and experience what it was like to be young, with him—much more so than I’d ever been able to experience it when I was actually in my twenties.”

Since Moore and Kutcher split in 2011, the actress has kept her personal life slightly more close to the vest, but she’s not afraid to discuss her amicable relationship with Willis, with whom she shares three daughters. “It’s a funny thing to say, but I’m very proud of our divorce,” she wrote in Inside Out. “I think Bruce was fearful at the beginning that I was going to make our split difficult, and that I would express my anger and whatever baggage that I had from our marriage by obstructing his access to the kids—that I’d turn to all of those ploys divorcing couples use as weapons. But I didn’t, and neither did he.”

In February 1980, Demi Moore, then 17, married first husband Freddy Moore, who was 12 years her senior. In her 2019 memoir, Inside Out, Demi revealed that she cheated on Freddy the night before their wedding. “Why did I do that? Why didn’t I go and see the man I was committing to spend the rest of my life with to express my doubts?” she wrote. “Because I couldn’t face the fact that I was getting married to distract myself from grieving the death of my father. Because I felt there was no room to question what I’d already put in motion. I couldn’t get out of the marriage, but I could sabotage it.”

The pair separated in 1983 and finalized their divorce in 1985. Freddy died in August 2022 at age 72 after battling Alzheimer’s disease.

Moore and her second husband, Bruce Willis, in November 1987, just four months after they met at a screening of Stakeout, which starred Moore’s ex-fiancé Emilio Estevez. Moore wrote in Inside Out that she and Willis decided to tie the knot on a whim during a trip to Las Vegas. "We were moving to the gambling tables when Bruce said, 'I think we should get married,’” she recalled. “We'd been joking about it on the flight there, but suddenly it didn't seem like he was kidding.” They had a second ceremony with family and friends in December 1987 that was officiated by Little Richard.

Willis and Moore announced their separation in June 1998. They finalized their divorce in October 2000 and famously settled their split in one day. “I still love Demi. We're very close,” Willis told Rolling Stone after the breakup. “We have three children whom we will continue to raise together, and we're probably as close now as we ever were. We realize we have a lifelong commitment to our kids. Our friendship continues. The institution has been set aside.”

Willis later moved on with Emma Heming, whom he wed in 2009. In 2022, Willis’ family announced that he’d been diagnosed with aphasia (which has since progressed to frontotemporal dementia) and would be retiring from acting.

Moore married her third husband, Ashton Kutcher, on Sept. 24, 2005, after two years of dating. The duo met after being introduced at a dinner party hosted by a mutual friend. Moore later revealed that she suffered a miscarriage early in their relationship when she was six months pregnant. “I can’t even really bring fully to words how lost, empty, desperate, confused [I was],” she recalled to Diane Sawyer in 2019. “I really lost sight of everything that was right in front of me, which was the family that I had.”

Moore and Kutcher announced their separation on Nov. 17, 2011. Kutcher filed for divorce one year later, and the duo finalized their split in December 2013.

Why did Demi Moore and Bruce Willis get divorced?

In her memoir, Moore claimed that Willis eventually told her he wasn’t sure he wanted to be married. She also felt that he believed her acting career would take her away from him and their children too much. After the end of their marriage, however, the pair maintained an amicable relationship, frequently supporting one another at public events and spending time with each other’s spouses. “It wasn’t easy at first, but we managed to move the heart of our relationship, the heart of what created our family, into something new that gave the girls a loving, supportive environment with both parents,” Moore wrote in Inside Out.

Willis, meanwhile, said in a 2000 interview with Rolling Stone that he wasn’t sure what caused their split. “I can give you the philosophical answer, which is also the most universal: Things change. People grow at different rates,” he explained. “People change at different rates. It’s difficult for any couple to keep their marriage intact under the best of circumstances, and our marriage was under a huge magnifying glass all the time. So it might have been a little more difficult for us.”

Why did Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher get divorced?

After months of speculation that Kutcher had cheated on Moore, the pair announced their separation in November 2011. “It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton," Moore said in a statement at the time. "As a woman, a mother, and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life."

Kutcher, meanwhile, issued his own statement, saying: "I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi. Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail."

In her 2019 memoir, Moore claimed that Kutcher cheated on her multiple times during their marriage. "I knew she wasn't lying," Moore wrote, referring to a woman who came forward to claim that she'd slept with Kutcher. "He admitted it right away."
