I’m just going to say it: I was a bad winter dresser. I grew up in Southern California, so I had no idea what went into a trendy cold-weather outfit. My go-to equation was always a pair of sweats, Uggs, and winter coat. All that mattered was that I was warm — but I soon realized there were ways to be cozy but still look chic.

Demi Moore’s recent ‘fit proved my point. The actress wore a casual T-shirt with flared denim and sleek boots. She carried a top-handle bag and wore her iconic aviator glasses. However, it was her basic duster coat that grabbed my attention.

Moore previously told InStyle that “less is more” when it comes to fashion, describing her style as “classic with a little bit of a twist.” That dressing MO certainly shines through with this outfit, as the black top layer isn’t loud, but rather simple and timeless. Still, it features distinctive elements like an ankle-grazing length, dramatic lapels, and draped silhouette that keep it from feeling boring.

Celebrities aren’t strangers to the overcoat trend. Katie Holmes championed the separate back in 2022, while Emma Stone reached for her own version at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. In these instances, the dusters are styled completely different, yet they seamlessly pair with each of their wardrobes — and the same goes for Moore’s ensemble.

Making a duster the star of your attire isn't difficult. Take this $26 Anrabess coat, for example. Pair it with big pants and a chunky boot to balance proportions. A fitted bodysuit will keep everything streamlined to offset the billowy uniform. Throw on an elegant beanie, like this cashmere Cuyana find, and you’re good to go. Whatever you do, don’t get overwhelmed and remember the simple, sleek duster goes with practically everything.

Dusters are also one of the most versatile winter layers you can own. "Depending on what climate you live in, you can wear the duster alone as a jacket, layer a hoodie underneath, or a trench on top,” celebrity stylist Shea Daspin previously told InStyle. Take it a step further and wear it under a chunky puffer coat for something extra snug.
