Demi Lovato is remembering their late friend Thomas "Tommy" Trussell III in their newly released single, "Unforgettable (Tommy's Song)." Released exactly two years after Tommy died following a battle with drug addiction, Demi announced that all net proceeds from the single will be donated to The Voices Project, a recovery advocacy organization.

"Two years ago I lost someone who meant so much to me. His name was Tommy and he was such a beautiful, special man," they said on Instagram. "I wrote this song the day after I found out that he had lost his battle with addiction. This disease is extremely cunning and powerful.."

Along with donating the single's proceeds, they promoted the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's hotline (1-800-622-HELP) as well. "If you know anyone who is struggling please call 1-800-662-HELP (the @samhsagov treatment helpline)," they added.

Check out the lyrics to "Unforgettable (Tommy's Song)" below.

[Verse 1]

Black and white
But nothin’ in this world can shine as bright as those green eyes
It’s hard to recognize you now
In a past life, id wear make-up in case you were passin’ by
It’s hard to recognize me now

Demi is recapping their friendship with Tommy and admiring his eyes while acknowledging much things have changed in his absence.

[Pre-Chorus]

Bad black coffee tastes so good when you’re around
I climb the steps past cigarettes, where are you now?
You got so high, you’re not coming down
Is it better now?
I hope you’re better now

Demi uses the pre-chorus to highlight their struggles with addiction while acknowledging Tommy's battle as well. They also shared optimistic wishes for Tommy following his untimely death.

On October 8, 2019, Demi announced that Tommy passed away via Instagram Stories. Posting a black-and-white photo of Tommy, they wrote, "Devastated. Please hold your loved ones tight. Tell them they are special and that you love them. Make sure they know it. RIP to my boo @sirtruss 🖤🖤🖤."

[Chorus]

You begged me not to forget you
But how could I?
You’re unforgettable (You, ooh-ooh, oh)
You’re unforgеttable (You, ooh-ooh, oh)
You’re unforgettablе (You, ooh-ooh, oh)
You’re unforgettable

[Verse 2]

Last time, you walked out my door
I swore this would be the last time
But now that you’re not around
I cry, my make-up’s all messed up, I didn’t lie
What would I give to talk right now?

Demi looked back on their final encounter with Tommy and the toll his death has taken on them.

They released their seventh studio album Dancing With the Devil... The Art of Starting Over in April 2021. Later that summer, Demi hinted at an upcoming project teasing "big things coming" in a post with G-Eazy.

According to popular blog JustJared, they said, "If you listen to it track by track if you follow the tracklisting, it’s kind of actually like the non-official soundtrack to the documentary. Because it really does follow my life over the past couple of years," during a conversation on Clubhouse. "When we went through the tracklisting and kind of mapped out how it kind of coincided with my life’s story, it made sense to add the more emotional stuff in the beginning and then transition into The Art of Starting Over.”

[Pre-Chorus]

Bad black coffee tastes so good when you’re around
I climb the steps past cigarettes, where are you now?
Oh, you got so high, you’re not coming down
Is it better now?
I hope you’re better now

[Chorus]

You begged me not to forget you
But how can I?
You’re unforgettable (You, ooh-ooh, oh)
You’re unforgettable (You, ooh-ooh, oh)
No, oh
You’re unforgettable (You, ooh-ooh, oh)
You’re unforgettable

[Bridge]

I wish we had the time to say (Oh)
I wish we had more time to waste (Oh)
I wish I didn’t have to break for you to hear me
I wish we had the time to say (More time)
I wish we had more time to waste (Oh yeah)
I wish I didn’t have to break for you to hear me

Demi looks back on different things they'd hope to do with Tommy before he passed away.

[Outro]
Hey
Ooh, no no
Ahh, uh
Ooh-ooh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh-oh-oh, mmm
