On Friday, Vanity Fair released a series of portraits of singer Demi Lovato by photgraher Patrick Ecclesine. Lovato posed for the photos with “no makeup, no clothes, and no retouching” — rules she set herself. The photos immediately went viral and quickly inspired the hashtag #WeAreProudOfYouDemi, which is trending worldwide on Twitter.

“I’m about to launch an album that finally represents who I truly am. How do I embrace this new chapter in my life? How do I really walk the walk? What does it mean to be confident?” Lovato told Vanity Fair. “It means letting go, being authentic, saying I don’t give a f—k and this is who I am. I want to show the side of me that’s real, that’s liberated, that’s free.” Lovato suggested the sexy photoshoot, which took place in her hotel room at the Greenwich Hotel.

The photos, which show Lovato in her bathroom and posing on her bed, immediately struck a chord with her many fans, who have followed her from her days on the Disney channel, through her stint in rehab, and to the place she is today: strong, confident, and gearing up for a new album.

“When I think of confidence, I think of many things but one thing in particular is feeling comfortable in your own skin. I thought there was something incredible about the idea of no makeup whatsoever, no clothes and no retouching,” says Lovato ina video for Vanity Fair. “Its empowering and it shows other women that you can get to a place where you can overcome the obstacles of body image issues and you can feel comfortable and confident in your skin.”

Fans reacted positively on Twitter to her photos, praising her for being comfortable in her own skin and showing others what confidence means.

“In the past I suffered from eating disorders and I basically went from hating every single inch of my body to working on myself and trying to figure out ways to love myself and love the skin that I’m in,” Lovato tells Vanity Fair. “I learned you can get to a place where you love the skin you’re in and I’m excited to share that with the world.”
