Demi Lovato Talked Disney Channel, Selena Gomez, and New Music in Harper's Bazaar Interview

In her new Harper's Bazaar cover story, Demi Lovato is opening up about her Disney Channel experiences: the good and the bad.

For the magazine's May issue, Demi discussed her forthcoming album and new singles (including the recent "I Love Me"), saying that her new music "will set the record straight on everything.” But she also took some time to reflect on her history, including the time spent working on Camp Rock and her series Sonny With a Chance on Disney Channel.

Demi prefaced her statement by saying that she's "grateful for the opportunities" the network gave her. And clearly she and Disney are on amicable terms, because she's doing an at-home performance for the upcoming Disney Family Singalong on April 16. But that time in her life, she said in the interview, was marked by too much time spent working.

"Do I wish that I’d had more downtime? Yes," she told Harper's Bazaar. "I think when you are a teenager and you’re given your big break, you’ll do anything to make it happen. I do feel that a lot of the way some of my life was handled and lived led to me kind of having a bit of a downfall, just because I was so overworked and I wasn’t dedicating enough time to my mental health or my personal life.”

Elsewhere in the piece, she talked about not repeating the mistakes she said she made when she was a teen. "I will say that I’ve really appreciated the patience the public has given me over the past year and a half to figure my sh*t out," she said, referencing the almost two years it's been since her overdose in 2018. "Because I think the mistake I made when I was 18, when I went into treatment, was that I went back to work six months later."

This time, she's been slowly coming back with new music: first with the wrenching ballad "Anyone," which she performed at the Grammys, and then with the poppy anthem "I Love Me." The latter also referenced times past, with not-so-subtle nods to Camp Rock and the Jonas Brothers.

In her Harper's interview, she admitted she's not in contact with the Jonas Brothers anymore, and that she and old bestie Selena Gomez are "not friends." But as her recent Instagram Live revealed, she is still close with Miley Cyrus. "She’s awesome, and I love her to death and always will, always have," Demi said. "But I think she’s kind of the only one from that era that I still stay in touch with.”
