Demi Lovato Reflects on Jealousy in Instagram Stories

Do you ever give your friend some good advice late at night, only to open your phone the next morning and wonder which genius abducted your texts? Demi Lovato, who candidly reflected on writing her journaling book, Staying Strong: 365 Days A Year, can relate.

Late Thursday night, the singer reposted on Instagram a fan who quoted her sage advice about envy. “Don’t torment yourself with jealousy. It’s a silly illusion that someone’s life is better than yours when the truth is that each one of us is on a different path,” the quote read.

“I love it when I say some smart sounding sh*t and it pops up online makin me look prolific,” Demi wrote in the corner of a repost. “Honest to God don’t remember saying that but damn - truth!!!”

She later unearthed the page the quote comes from: The May 13 entry of the book she published in 2013. And as she revealed, the fact that she wrote the book on a major deadline likely had something to do with her spotty memory.

“True story: I wrote this book in a matter of DAYS because my lazy ass pushed it off until the last second to turn it in,” she explained. “Don’t remember writing all these BUT I definitely did write it at my dining room table with multiple cups of coffee!!”

Procrastination is a common thing to experience when you have a big project due, or a test you need to study for — and as it turns out, even the world’s biggest pop stars fight it from time to time. (Is there anything quite as motivating as a looming time limit?) One of the best ways to fight that block is to just get started, because it’s easier to keep going once you have. Experts say aiming for progress rather than perfection will often help you in your quest, so try to finish a paragraph or a page, no matter how “good” it is — you can always edit it later.

As for jealousy, Demi is totally right. Jealousy can be normal, but it can also be destructive, and the best way to release those emotions is to reframe the emotion to focus on what you need or have instead.
