Demi Lovato nails the mid-century look in her dining room – and we're buying into it

Though mid-century design has never really fallen out of style since its popularization in the 1940s, there is no denying that it's topping trend lists again in 2023.

Of course, mid-century modern homes' pared-back, high-end functionality means its popularity will probably always endure with homeowners – even 80 years on from the work of George Nelson and Herman Miller. However, we'd also argue that because it's so easy to pair with contemporary interior design trends, interest in the look is unlikely to wane any time soon. A good example of this matching of contemporary and mid-century is on show in singer Demi Lovato's lavender-toned dining room.

Featuring sleek lines, organic shapes, and raw materials, the space is undeniably mid-century – but its color scheming and pattern plays bring a fresh twist.

Designed by Argyle Design founders Kat Bell and James Drew, Demi's entire home is playful and eclectic. The lavender walls are a noticeable contemporary addition – it's a shade that's topped color trends in 2023 (it is Coloro + WGSN's color of the year, after all).

Alongside the statement table and vintage chairs, the room exhibits Uchiwa wall sconces (which you can pick up from 1stDibs below) and an aquatic-style chandelier from Entler Studio.

'In a mid-century modern dining room, furniture takes center stage. Opt for a dining table with clean lines and minimal embellishments, serving as the focal point of the room.

'Complementing it with vintage-inspired chairs, with organic shapes and sculptural details, will add visual interest and embody the essence of mid-century modern design,' Renée says.

But what about the more contemporary elements in Demi's room? Yes, Renée approves of them too.

'The walls play a vital role in setting the tone of a mid-century modern dining room. Soft colors, including pale lavender shades, create a serene and harmonious atmosphere,' she explains. 'These gentle hues serve as a backdrop for the rest of the design elements, allowing the furniture and decor to shine.'

And, unsurprisingly, the singer's rug goes down equally well. 'Animal prints, in particular, offer a touch of boldness without sacrificing the clean aesthetic of the era,' Renée comments. 'Such rugs create a captivating graphic element that perfectly aligns with mid-century modern style.'
