The Bachelorette is the new celebrity Tinder, it seems. On the heels of news about Gigi Hadid and Tyler Cameron’s relationship came rumors that Demi Lovato and another Bachelorette star, Mike Johnson, were dating.
It’s easy to see why this is becoming a trend: Viewers get to watch these contestants go on dates and, from there, can imagine how they might be in a relationship. And if you’re a super-famous person like Demi Lovato, you can probably easily slide into a contestant's DMs and get a response.
Here’s a breakdown of the reported relationship between Lovato and Johnson.
July 2019: Lovato proved herself to be one die-hard Bachelorette fangirl—for a certain contestant, anyway. She posted on Instagram Stories, showing footage of Johnson on the show with the caption “Mike I accept your rose.” Per People, she could be heard saying, “Swing me, kiss me! Boo boo,” referring to Johnson, naturally.
On July 2, after he was eliminated, Johnson wrote on Twitter, “Jus saying, my future wife though girl you ready for smiles, adventure, comfort, growth, honesty, laughter, me falling using my inhaler and kissing your stretch marks and imperfections. Where u hiding.”
Safe to say, Lovato was not hiding. A fan posted a ’gram showing his tweet plus another fan’s that read, “It’s your chance Demi,” and Lovato was there for it. “I’M RIGHT HERE MIKE I’M RIGHT HERE BOO MY MOM ALREADY LOVES YOU TOO,” she wrote. Yes to being bold about those feelings!
September 5: Lovato posted a gorgeous unedited bikini pic to Instagram that was accompanied by a caption about self-love and getting over body hang-ups. Johnson was absolutely there for it, writing, ”Look at me like that again…love yaself.”
September 14: An “insider” (take it for what you will!) told E! that the two “did go on a date, and it’s been going well. They seem to have a lot in common and are just enjoying getting to know each other.”
Johnson also “liked” this photo of Lovato:
September 18: E! reports on new details about Lovato and Johnson’s weekend date, saying that the two went to dinner in Los Angeles, and he had her “laughing the entire date.” They are reportedly texting each other and planning for a second date. “She has always had a huge crush on Mike, and once they met in person, there was an instant connection,” the source says.
September 22: The romance seems to heat up. During an interview with E!, Johnson spoke about the budding romance for the first time, singing Lovato’s praises while letting fans know that they’re taking things slow. “I’m just getting to know Demi,” he said. “I think she’s absolutely fantastic, and I don’t want no pressure on her, no pressure on me—we’re just trying to get to know each other. That’s all.”
Still, he made it clear that even though they’re taking their time to get to know each other, Lovato is the only girl in his phone right now. When E! asked if he was seeing any other women, Johnson said, “No, it’s just Demi. That’s the only person I'm talking to.” Seems like very casual exclusivity.
September 30: Johnson spills more details about his relationship with Lovato on Ben Higgins and Ashley Iaconetti’s podcast. “We’ve gone on more than one date,” Johnson said, according to People. “I like her tattoos—we both have a lot of tattoos. Demi has more than me.”
He continued, “And, uh, she kisses really well.”
Johnson also added that Lovato was the one who made the first move on him. “She definitely was the aggressor, you know, I find it incredibly sexy,” he said. “I love that, like, ‘Come at me. You want me, come at me.’ I want you, I’m [going to] come at you. I’m coming at her as well.”
October 14: People reports that Johnson and Lovato are “done.” That same day, during an appearance on Good Morning America’s third hour, the Bachelorette alum asked Keke Palmer out on the air. “I made a mistake, I don’t like dating in public,” he said. “But, if I were to ask you, if we could go on a date…?” Palmer didn't give him an answer, however.
October 28: E! News reports that Johnson and Lovato’s relationship is totally done. “Demi and Mike’s fling has fizzled out and they aren’t seeing each other or texting like they were before,” their source said. “Nothing happened; it just ran its course.
“Demi was definitely interested in Mike at one point, but it was short-lived and she wasn’t ever planning on dating him seriously,” the source added.
We’ll update this post with more info as it comes in.
