Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich had a whirlwind pandemic relationship that led to an engagement in July 2020, followed by a very messy breakup. Despite the short timeline, the couple has been making headlines for the past few months. Here’s how it all went down:

Early March 2020: Okay, at the start of March, Demi Lovato straight-up told Ellen DeGeneres during a very candid conversation that she was single. “I was on dating apps for a while, but as I’ve spent some time with myself over the past couple months, I realized that I am the type of person that will find any way to regulate when I’m sad or lonely or whatever,” Lovato said during an episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “I have to fight those battles on my own, and I can’t let somebody come in and fix those issues for me. So right now I’m single and spending my Saturday nights by myself.“

Late March 2020: However, later that month fans were noticing a lot of flirting between the pair on social media. In one post, Ehrich shared a video on Instagram, singing “Yellow” by Coldplay. “4D🌹<3,” he captioned the post. Fans were sure this translated to “for Demi.”

A source who spoke to Us Weekly said the relationship was “off to a strong start,” while a second source told the publication that the pair had “met a few weeks ago.” So yeah, things were still pretty vague.

March 28, 2020: Lovato and Ehrich made their first appearance together when Lovato accidentally popped up in Ehrich’s Instagram Live. He was performing on the piano when Lovato walked into the frame. Ehrich seemed to mouth, “I’m live,” multiple times before she realized, covering her face with a blanket, making a surprised sound, and popping right back out of the shot—it was all pretty adorable, if you ask me.

May 2020: The pair made their actual, on-purpose appearance as a couple in Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande’s music video for “Stuck With U.”

Lovato and Ehrich both posted an extended clip dancing and kissing to the new song. “Happy to be a part of something so special right now. Like really REALLY happy if you can’t tell... 🥰🥰🥰 #stuckwithu,” she wrote.

In a caption of the same clip, Ehrich wrote, “My whole heart. #stuckwithu 💓All proceeds go to the First Responders Children’s Foundation 🙏”

July 23, 2020: And just like that—only about four months later—their whirlwind romance reached engagement status. “When I was a little girl, my birth dad always called me his ‘little partner’ - something that might’ve sounded strange without his Southern cowboy like accent,” she wrote in an Instagram caption. “To me it made perfect sense. And today that word makes perfect sense again but today I’m officially going to be someone else’s partner.”

She continued, “@maxehrich—I knew I loved you the moment I met you. It was something I can’t describe to anyone who hasn’t experienced it firsthand but luckily you did too. I’ve never felt so unconditionally loved by someone in my life (other than my parents) flaws and all. You never pressure me to be anything other than myself. And you make me want to be the best version of myself. I’m honored to accept your hand in marriage. I love you more than a caption could express but I’m ecstatic to start a family and life with you. I love you forever my baby. My partner. Here’s to our future!!!! 😩😭❤️🥰😍”

August 8, 2020: Two weeks after getting engaged, the couple celebrated their five-month anniversary at Nobu in Malibu, California—the same restaurant the pair celebrated their engagement with a small group of close friends last month, according to People.

“Falling more and more in love everyday with you honey,” Lovato captioned her Instagram post. Ehrich shared the same photo, writing, “I love u baby happy anniversary.”

August 20, 2020: Ehrich’s birthday tribute to Lovato on Instagram couldn’t have been any sweeter.

“Words fall short baby. You light up this world & I am the luckiest man alive to call you my fiancé,” he captioned six intimate selfies. “I keep falling more in love with you & your pure heart & soul every moment. Can’t wait to make endless memories with u & forever cherish you with all my heart. Happy 28th, my angel @ddlovato 💘🎂🥳.”

September 12, 2020: In a new interview, Lovato admitted that quarantining during COVID-19 “accelerated” her relationship with Ehrich. “I was set to have my comeback this year after being out of the spotlight for a while. And things didn’t really go according to plan, but like I said, everything is about timing,” Lovato said during The Morning Mash Up on SiriusXM Hits 1, per People. “We were able to share this time together that we wouldn’t have normally gotten to spend. And that accelerated our relationship on a level that you can’t really explain to people, but quarantine either makes or breaks the deal. And it really made that. So I’m really blessed, really fortunate, and continuing to count my blessings every day.”

September 24, 2020: People magazine reports Lovato and Ehrich have ended their engagement and relationship. “It was a tough decision, but Demi and Max have decided to go their separate ways to focus on their respective careers,” says a source. “They have respect and love for one another and will always cherish the time they spent together.

October 2, 2020: “Sources” have been giving details about Lovato and Ehrich's breakup to tabloids for weeks, but they themselves haven't said anything. Until now. Lovato released a telling breakup song called “Still Have Me," with lyrics like “It feels like someone’s stolen / All the light I ever had” and “Everything around me shattered / All the highs are now just lows / But it doesn’t even matter / ’Cause I'd rather be alone.”

Ehrich, meanwhile, went on a very messy Instagram Story rant about Lovato. He even brought Ariana Grande's exes, Pete Davidson and the late Mac Miller, into the situation, which…ick.

“It’s just the craziest thing. This is the most bizarre experience that I hope no one ever has to experience, ever. Because no person deserves to feel this way,” he said. “Pete Davidson didn’t deserve to feel this way. Do you think he wrote that text to Mac Miller? Ha. Open your eyes. It's a calculated P.R. stunt, but my team is going to hate me for saying any of this.”

He continued, “I was in love. The whole world should freakin' know it. I thought I found the real deal, now I found out that I was used. But I hope ["Still Have Me"] is number one, because you know what, if that’s what someone wants in the material world, here you go, you have it. I hope this makes you happy. Enjoy. You just lost someone who loved you fully, completely, infinitely, for everything.”

October 12, 2020: TMZ captured photos of Ehrich reportedly at the same beach where he proposed to Lovato this summer. He was pictured sitting on the sand looking sad.

People on Twitter had some strong reactions. “Max Ehrich really called paparazzi to follow him to the beach where he proposed to Demi just so he can fake cry,” one person tweeted.

October 13, 2020: After photos emerged of Ehrich sulking on the beach, a source told E! News that Lovato is "having all sorts of issues with Max not leaving her alone."

"He has been trying to get in contact with her family and friends and they have all blocked him," the source continued. "She's in contact with lawyers now on what to do."

November 15, 2020: Lovato joked about Ehrich while hosting the E! People's Choice Awards. “I am so excited to be here tonight because, honestly, this year has been the longest three years of my life,” she said in her opening monologue. “Don't get me wrong: It started out amazing. I performed at the Grammys and sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl. But then COVID hit, and everything shut down. So I did what everyone else did: I went into lockdown mode and got engaged.”

She continued, “I got into painting, photography, meditation, tested the limits of Postmates Unlimited. Also, I didn’t know this could happen, but [I] reached the end of Instagram four times. I binged seven seasons of Pretty Little Liars, got unengaged, then went looking for aliens in the desert.”

November 19, 2020: Ehrich (reportedly) left some shady comments on Lovato's Instagram post in which she debuted her short new haircut. He wrote that she should “stop talking” about him and was “exploiting” the breakup “for clout” in a since deleted comment, captured by screenshots, which are ultimately unverifiable.
