Demi Lovato is apologizing to fans after taking a trip to Israel that she previously described as "magical."

Demi, who posted on Instagram about her trip to Israel earlier this week, got a lot of criticism from fans, some of whom accused her of promoting or supporting Israel during the country’s decades-long conflict with Palestine. Some also accused her of taking a political stance on the conflict.

The "Confident" singer then went on her Instagram Story (which has since expired) to say that she feels "extremely frustrated" by the controversy and to apologize for accidentally upsetting anyone, according to a screenshot taken by Entertainment Tonight. She was also super candid about why she went on the trip in the first place.

"I accepted a free trip to Israel in exchange for a few posts," she wrote. "No one told me there would be anything wrong with going, or that I could possibly be offending anyone. With that being said, I'm sorry if I've hurt or offended anyone, that was not my intention."

Demi said that she wasn’t warned that there could be "potential backlash" over her trip and talking about her experience. "This was meant to be a spiritual experience for me, NOT A POLITICAL STATEMENT," she said. "Now I realize it hurt people and, for that, I'm sorry."

Demi also said she was "sorry I'm not more educated, and sorry for thinking this trip was just a spiritual experience." Apparently, those close to Demi didn’t think she should apologize, but she said she wanted to. She mentioned that she was "going against all advice right now and apologizing because it feels right to me."

"I'd rather get in trouble for being authentic to myself than staying quiet to please other people," she finished. "I love my fans, all of them, from all over the world."

Before the backlash, Demi appeared to have a great time during her trip. "There is something absolutely magical about Israel. I’ve never felt such a sense of spirituality or connection to God…something I’ve been missing for a few years now," she wrote on Instagram, alongside several photos of her travels. "Spirituality is so important to me…to be baptized in the Jordan river – the same place Jesus was baptized – I’ve never felt more renewed in my life."

Demi also said that the trip was "so important for my well-being, my heart, and my soul. I’m grateful for the memories made and the opportunity to be able to fill the God-sized hole in my heart. Thank you for having me, Israel."

Demi has since turned off the comments on her Instagram account.
