Demi Lovato hasn't said much about her breakup with Max Ehrich, but she made a joke about it while hosting the E! People's Choice Awards on Sunday, November 15.

The quip was short but effective. “I am so excited to be here tonight because, honestly, this year has been the longest three years of my life,” she said in her opening monologue. “Don't get me wrong: It started out amazing. I performed at the Grammys and sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl. But then COVID hit, and everything shut down.”

She continued, “So I did what everyone else did: I went into lockdown mode and got engaged,” she said, referring to Ehrich's proposal from over the summer

But the kicker came at the end. “I got into painting, photography, meditation, tested the limits of Postmates Unlimited,” she said. “Also, I didn't know this could happen, but [I] reached the end of Instagram four times. I binged seven seasons of Pretty Little Liars, got unengaged, then went looking for aliens in the desert.”

“Unengaged!” We love a self-deprecating queen. Watch this all for yourself, below.

Like we said, Lovato has opted to stay mum about her and Ehrich's whirlwind relationship, which was first reported around March 2020 and ended in September after calling off their engagement. She released a song called “Still Have Me” shortly after the breakup with lyrics that hint at tough times. “It feels like someone’s stolen / All the light I ever had,” she sings. “Everything around me shattered / All the highs are now just lows / But it doesn’t even matter / ’Cause I'd rather be alone.”

Based on her People's Choice Awards monologue, though, it seems Lovato has worked through her emotions and can find the levity in what happened. We just hope she's happy.
