Demi Lovato Confirmed She and Selena Gomez Aren’t Friends Anymore
Demi Lovato spoke to Harper’s Bazaar about her past friendship with Selena Gomez and confirmed they’re no longer friends.
After Demi performed “Anyone” at the Grammys, Selena posted a tribute to her on Instagram Stories.
If there’s one thing that’s a given about growing up, it’s that you definitely won’t stay friends with everyone you used to hang out with as a kid. It’s just a fact of life! People grow apart! And even though Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez were super close during their Barney and Disney days, their friendship is over, according to Demi.
Talking to Harper’s Bazaar for the magazine’s May issue, Demi opened up about where her and Selena’s famously on-again, off-again friendship stands and how she felt about Selena’s Grammys tribute to her. In case you forgot about the Grammys (can you believe that was this year? 😩), Demi gave a heart-wrenching performance of “Anyone,” which she recorded days before she was hospitalized for an overdose.
After Selena watched it, she posted an Instagram Story about Demi and wrote, “I wish there were words to describe how beautiful, inspirational, and DESERVED this moment was. Demi, I’m so happy for you. Thank you for your courage and bravery.”
In 2018, Selena spoke with Elle magazine about Demi’s struggle with substance abuse and said, “All I’m saying is, I reached out personally. I didn’t do a public thing. I didn’t want to. I…I love her. I’ve known her since I was 7. So…it’s…that’s what I’ll say.”
Demi didn’t respond to her Instagram Story from this year and finally explained why. In the just-published interview, Demi explained, “When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. But I’m not friends with her, so it felt….” Demi didn’t finish her sentence, but the post obviously made her feel a little uncomfortable in some way. She continued, “I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”
Selena hasn’t commented on their friendship in a while, but judging by what Demi said, it’s over.
