Demi Lovato Has Come Out As Non-Binary and Officially Changed Their Pronouns

Demi Lovato took to Instagram early Wednesday morning to make an announcement in conjunction with their new podcast, 4D with Demi Lovato. The singer revealed that they identify as non-binary and will now be using the pronouns they/them.

"Over the past year and a half I've been doing some healing and self reflective work and through this work, I've had the revelation that I identify as non-binary," Demi said in a video on their feed. "With that said, I’ll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them. I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering."

In their caption, Demi explained the announcement comes after "a lot of healing and self-reflective work," and they are not done with that process. "I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson," they said. They ended their message, saying, "Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me. I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths and know I am sending so much love your way xox."

After posting the video, Demi also updated their pronouns in their Instagram bio.

On the first episode of their podcast, Demi discussed the announcement with Alok Vaid-Menon, an author, performer, and important voice in the non-binary community. Demi explained that they're still going to dress the way they want. "There might be a time when I want to wear a full wig. There might be a time when I want to dress completely femme-presenting and that doesn't mean that in that moment I'm identifying as a woman, it just means that's what I want to wear in that moment," they said. Alok then added that gender isn't about appearance, "it's about who we are."

During their discussion, Demi also said how important their correct pronouns are to them. "To me, it would mean the world if people could start identifying me as they/them," they said. "I think it's important because I want to use these pronouns that feel right to me."
