At 18 years old, Demi Lovato entered a rehab facility to seek treatment for substance abuse, bulimia, depression, and self-harm. She told Glamour in our November 2016 issue that, back then, she used substances to make herself feel less empty—but now, five years later and sober, Lovato finds fulfillment by loving herself. She posted a photo on Instagram earlier this week that implored people to "be gentle" with themselves on the road to self-love. And she's continuing the good vibes with another empowering selfie—focusing on her thighs.
The "Confident" singer posted a beautiful thigh picture to Instagram on Thursday night (April 13), along with an important message about body positivity: "I don't have a thigh gap and I'm still beautiful the way I am. #recovery #selflove #EVERYbodyisbeautiful," Lovato wrote. Damn straight!
Ever since getting sober, Lovato has been an outspoken advocate for mental health, self-acceptance, and body positivity. A quick skim of her recent Instagram posts is proof of that. On World Health Day just last week, Lovato snapped a pic and told her 56.1 million followers to "take care" of their bodies and minds. "Every day you have the chance to turn it all around," she wrote.
Of course, body acceptance is an everyday battle. In her Glamour interview last year, Lovato opened up about times she feels insecure.
"I did the Victoria’s Secret Swim Special, and being surrounded by supermodels’ bodies was triggering to me," she said. "I remember asking, 'How do you maintain your figure?' Some said, 'I really have to work at it.' Others said, 'It’s genetics.' It was interesting to hear that it wasn’t through unhealthy [behaviors]. It was a great learning experience. I still felt sexy, having a different body than these women. I had Wilmer [Valderrama, her ex-boyfriend] there, who loved my curves—that helped."
Being transparent about these issues is the only way to effect change. We applaud Demi Lovato for continuing to speak out.
