Delta Just Announced the Coolest Free Perk for Its Flights

When it comes to flying, what’s the only thing better than a good book and smooth air? A good book, smooth air, and texting your loved ones at 30,000 feet.

Well, if you’re one of the 180 million people each year who fly Delta, an awesome upgrade is headed your way. Starting Sunday, October 1st, Delta will be offering free mobile messaging in flight.

Yes, as in, you won’t have to purchase a WiFi package to send an ETA and some celebratory emojis to your Girlfriends Getaway group chat. The complimentary service will work with iMessage, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger.

So whether you simply want to check in with the babysitter or let your hubby pre-pickup know your flight is landing 20 minutes early, your travel experience just got a whole lot better.

"We know many of Delta's customers want or need to stay connected in the air and on the ground, which is why we're investing in an easy, free way to send and receive messages inflight through some of the most popular global platforms," said Tim Mapes, Delta's Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer in a company press release.

This marks the first U.S. global carrier to implement this offer and the service will be available on Gogo-enabled Delta flights (Gogo powers Delta’s fleets WiFi service). Texting will only be activated when the airplane reaches a safe cruising altitude, and cell phone calling will still be strictly prohibited—you’ll have to keep your phone in airplane mode.

Shhhh, don’t tell your boss.
