A GrubHub driver making a food delivery to an animal shelter in Virginia left with more than a good tip last month - he adopted a dog!

Alan Moncayo dropped off lunch to a manager at Fairfax County Animal Shelter in Lorton, Virginia when he spotted Jihoo, a 65-pound black and white pitbull mix through the window.

“He looked at me, and I looked back at him,” Moncayo told People. “It was love at first sight.”

Moncayo, a single dad who had his 5-year old daughter Sabrina along with him on the lunch delivery, asked the staff if they could meet the dog.

“My daughter’s been asking me for a puppy for the longest time,” Moncayo said.

The duo played catch with Jihoo and they immediately connected.

“It was just a really special moment where [Jihoo] kind of caught [Alan’s] eye . . .and Jihoo was just an affectionate ball of mush who loved everybody,” Rebecca Cavedon, Communications Manager with the Fairfax County Department of Animal Sheltering told Southern Living.

The shelter was in the middle of an adoption event and were waiving all adoption fees for dogs over 45-pounds on the day that Moncayo and his daughter came in. They brought Jihoo home that day with supplies to “help them get started on their new life together.”

Cavedon said instant connections like the one Moncayo and Jihoo happen sometimes, especially if an animal at the shelter reminds someone of an old pet they once had. The shelter also works hard to match families with a pet that suits their lifestyle and home.

What made this match particularly special is that Jihoo had been at the shelter for 240 days. The average time an animal typically stays is 24 days.

“Jihoo was so sweet, so playful and just the perfect dog. He is so loved by our entire community and we are so thrilled he’s doing so well in his new home,” Cavedon said.

Moncayo and Jihoo have even been back to visit the staff at the shelter on another food delivery, Cavedon said.

“Knowing that we could bring this family together and seeing how loved Jihoo is, that means the world to us,” she said.
