Martin Luther King Jr. marched down a long and inconvenient road toward human rights, a path that cost him his life when he was assassinated in 1968.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national holiday observed on the third Monday of January, honors King's legacy and life as the "only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer and improve their communities," according to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

King's sacrifice has inspired events that call people to volunteer their time to give back to the Delaware community through various acts of service.
