On the off chance you haven't been on the internet since last Friday, Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin maybe (definitely? maybe?) got surprise-married at a courthouse in New York City. There's been some major confusion here, with different outlets reporting different things, Hailey denying it while her uncle confirmed it, etc.

Basically, no one knows what's actually going on, but in an effort to help you comb through the madness, here's a definitive timeline of how this news got hella twisted.

Thursday, September 13, 7:40 p.m.

TMZ reports that Justin and Hailey were spotted at a courthouse obtaining a marriage license on Thursday afternoon, and many (i.e. the entire internet) take that to mean they had a courthouse wedding. They reported that eyewitnesses heard Justin tell Hailey, "I can't wait to marry you, baby." Originally, the outlet only reported that they obtained the paperwork, saying they were going to get married early this week.

But the next day, Justin's mom Pattie Mallette tweets this out of the blue. And it's like, okay, what the hell does that mean?

Friday, September 14, 2:39 p.m.

Then, TMZ pivoted slightly, reporting that they did get the paperwork and Justin told an official at the courthouse, "Thanks for keeping it on the DL," which obviously added fuel to the fire.

And in a maj plot twist, People reported that the couple legitimately tied the knot.“They went ahead and did it without listening to anyone,” a source told them, and a "religious source" who spoke to their families said that they legally got married, but they're going to have a religious ceremony later on. “They’re going to have a big blowout, in front of God and everyone they love,” the source said.

E! had another source that mirrored those comments. "They didn't tell anyone they were doing it," the source said. "They are doing a separate ceremony out of the country with a few family members soon as well."

FYI, People still maintains to this day that Justin and Hailey officially got married, while other outlets have backtracked.

How to obtain a marriage license in New York City

In case you're one of those people who has no idea how marriage licenses work (a.k.a. me), apparently in the city of New York you have to apply for a license, go get it in person, and then there's a 24 hour waiting period to be able to get legally married. The license only lasts for 60 days, which means that if they haven't signed the papers yet, they will within the next two months.

Friday, September 14, 5:15 p.m.

Hailey tweets to clear the air, saying that "I understand where the speculation is coming from, but I'm not married yet!" The tweet, however, has since been deleted, which is... suspicious.

Monday, September 17, 4:26 p.m.

TMZ and the Daily Mail switch tacks to say that actually, Justin and Hailey did get married last month, and they didn't sign a prenup. They got married the same day they got their marriage license at the courthouse. There was a preacher there and everything. Literally, to quote TMZ, "People got it right."

According to both publications, they requested a prenup the same day as their marriage, but that wouldn't allow enough time to actually draft one before they signed the license. They haven't requested a post-nuptial agreement, as of now.

The couple still plans to have a formal ceremony.

And that brings you up to speed! This post will be updated as more are-they-aren't-they news breaks. Cheers!
