Deer Sprint Across Colorado Ski Trail Before Christmas

Christmas has come and gone. Some of us skiers hit the slopes in honor of Baby Jesus, whereas others holed up with family and friends to spread cheer and stack holiday loot.

During Christmas, a few members of the former category spotted an on-brand cadre of furry friends at Telluride Ski Resort, Colorado.

I'm fully aware—Telluride, who called these deer "(rein)deer," might've been embellishing a little bit.

One commenter below the post wisely noted that this wasn't Rudolph and his pals paying Telluride a visit: "Mule Deer, but sure," they wrote. As any wildlife biologist knows, the commenter was correct—reindeer don't habitate anywhere near Colorado.

Isn't embellishing the point of Christmas, though?

The fabled existence of Santa and his elves gives merry-doers the license to lie outright in service of spreading holiday cheer, as does the arrival of gifts from relatives you see once a year. Did you actually like that criminally myopic self-help book your father-in-law gave you? Probably not. Are you going to throw a fit because he didn't get you a snowmobile and a brand-new pair of skis like you secretly hoped? Also no.

To preserve Christmas is to briefly glance away from all that is banal and unfortunate, believing that everything, if only for a day, is mystical and right. This is particularly true when a dinner guest brings up politics while the Christmas ham is making the rounds.

So you know what? I'm with Telluride on this one. That was Rudolph and his fellow reindeer on the slopes, and you can't tell me otherwise.
