How To Decorate Your Home For The Holidays Without Breaking The Bank, According To Genevieve Gorder
Holiday shopping can be stressful (possibly the understatement of the century, we know.) As fun as it may start out-with the Christmas music playing and the stores decked out in tinsel and garland-waiting in long lines and watching your bank account dwindle is just not the best time.
Fortunately for all celebrants who aren't the Grinch, Genevieve Gorder, the Trading Spaces designer, hosted a free online class in partnership with T.J.Maxx where she shared some tips to alleviate some of the headache.
"As an interior designer, I love to create spaces that are unique to the personalities and needs of individuals living there," Genevieve said. Watch her course "How To Design a Uniquely-You Space," then try some of her wallet-friendly decorating tips. Because holiday decor is supposed to be fun!
1) Buy a lot, but don't spend a lot.
Like most people, Genevieve can't justify spending a lot of money on decorations that will be on display for a month or so at most, so finding great deals on decorations is key. Since you can buy just about everything for under $50 at T.J.Maxx, that's her go-to-even for wrapping paper, which she snags for about $1.99.
2) Get crafty with what you own.
Genevieve encourages decorators to get crafty and use what's already around. You don't have to buy something for the sake of having holiday decor, unless you really love it. "It can be as easy as displaying mounds of red spices in a decorative bowl atop your dining table-a DIY centerpiece-or as simple as arranging dry florals and branches from the backyard into a makeshift wreath," she advised. Both of these ideas can be unique to your home and different each year so they'll always feel "new."
3) Celebrate your history with collectibles.
Family heirlooms and collectible items are great ways to celebrate your history. Using these items as part of your decoration will make your home anything but cookie-cutter around the holidays. Overtime, as you collect, they'll become more and more a focal point at gatherings, so you'll always have something neat to talk about with guests. "Your history is representative of what makes you, you, so why not show that in your home? It can also be a great conversation-starter! For me, Scandinavia is half of my story and fuels a lot of how I design and decorate-and I host almost as much as I design," Genevieve shared.
