The critically-acclaimed showbiz series Hacks is returning for a new season.

In HBO Max's send-up of the comedy world, Emmy winner Jean Smart plays washed-up Vegas comic Deborah Vance as she struggles to connect with her new writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder), who has recently been cancelled due to a bad tweet. The show was renewed before the season 1 finale, which ended with a cliffhanger that saw Deborah leaving her Vegas residency and Ava sending details about the comic's life to producers developing a show about her.

Creators and showrunners Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky said of the renewal, "We have been blown away by the positive reception to Hacks—we owe this renewal to every single person who tuned into the show and then told a friend to watch. We're so glad that story resonated with audiences, and we can't wait to get to work on season two. See you soon!"

Season 2 premieres on May 12, 2022.

HBO Max announced the show's premiere date along with a teaser trailer (seen below) showing some of Deborah and Ava's adventures on the road. In the clips, we see Deborah trashing an antiques shop (which looks different than the shop from season 1's premiere), Ava cheering as the women dumpster dive, and the duo enjoying some shopping, sailing, and drinking.

The season's official description reads, "The dark mentorship between legendary Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her young, entitled writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) continues to evolve as the two travel across the country workshopping Deborah’s new stand-up act."

Laurie Metcalf, Margaret Cho, and more stars are joining the cast.

In addition to the return of the entire season 1 cast, season 2 is adding some esteemed female actors and comedians as recurring guest stars. Lady Bird actor Laurie Metcalf, Euphoria standout Martha Kelley, and Mulan actor Ming-Na Wen are some of the newest recurring actors announced, as well as comedian Margaret Cho in a guest starring role. Though their characters haven't been announced, we expect some hilarious scenes between the stars and Smart.

Deborah Vance will have a rough time on tour.

In a February interview, showrunner and Broad City vet Paul W. Downs said that the show's veteran comedian will have to deal with a big adjustment once she leaves Vegas. "What we were most interested in exploring was what it’s like for someone like her to keep bombing," Downs said.

"It might be something novel and might be something exciting in the beginning, but someone like her who has fans that come to see her, and sells out a 2,000-seat theater in Vegas and crushes, what is it like when you’re on the road in small venues and not doing well? What does that do to your spirit, and what does that do to your relationship, and what does that do to your psyche?"

Smart also shared what she knew so far about her character's journey in a backstage interview at the Emmy Awards last September.

"I do know as promised at the end of Season 1 I will be going on the road a bit to try out new material, although I think they definitely want to keep her based in LA. She will be going out a bit to comedy clubs to try out new material. I do know they will be exploring her relationship with her sister, which has been a huge traumatic part of her life. That’s all I have so far," she said.
