Debbie Gibson isn't backing down when it comes to fighting for her health.

The singer-songwriter, 53, recently opened up about her years-long battle with Lyme disease, which she said is something she works to overcome every single day.

"I've come so far," she recently told PEOPLE while attending Bring Change to Mind's 11 Revels & Revelations event in New York City on Monday, Oct. 9.

"I’ve learned how to manage my symptoms. I’ve learned how to overcome," she stated, noting that she prefers to use the terminology of "overcoming Lyme disease" rather than "struggling with Lyme disease."

"I’ve really overcome a lot and I just remain diligent and consumed with my body and my mind and it’s working," Gibson said of her battle with the condition, which can cause fatigue, severe headaches, joint pain and more serious symptoms, according to the CDC.

"It’s kind of day-by-day, week-by-week, month-by-month, overall not really good," the "Foolish Beat" songstress continued, explaining, "I just have to be super diligent and if I get away from being diligent, I start to get taken down."

However, as Gibson highlighted, she's come a long way in her journey. "I went from not even being able to get out of bed and walk to doing 60 concerts this past year," the music artist added, seemingly referring to her "The Body Remembers Encore" Tour that ran throughout the summer.

But fortunately for Gibson, her difficult health journey has had some upsides, including the new perspective it's given her on life. "It humbles you when you deal with a major health issue and mental health," she stated. "We're all just trying to put one foot in front of the other."

Now, Gibson is gearing up for her "Winterlicious" holiday shows, which are expected to kickoff in late November.
