‘Dead to Me’ Star Diana Maria Riva Says There’s Still More Story for Detective Perez

*Warning: Spoilers ahead*

ICYMI: Netflix just renewed Dead to Me for season three. While the streaming service hasn’t released any further details, Diana Maria Riva is confident the brand-new episodes will feature more Detective Ana Perez.

The 50-year-old actress recently sat down for an exclusive interview with PureWow, where she discussed what’s to come in season three. Although she hasn’t officially been asked to reprise her role (at least not yet), Riva is hopeful that Detective Perez will return for more.

“I don’t get the sense that we’re finished seeing Perez,” she told PureWow. “But to what capacity will she come back? Will she be back on their case again? Or go completely AWOL? I have no clue, but I don’t necessarily think that she’ll disappear.”

Riva also discussed the shocking season two finale and revealed that even she was surprised when (spoiler alert!) Detective Perez let Jen (Christina Applegate) walk free after confessing to murder.

“I was caught by surprise the way the scene ended, but I’m not shocked. I feel like there’s more story to tell, so I’m hoping that we get to see that,” she continued. “There was just so much to unpack. So many things happened this season that people didn’t see coming. As far as being a cast member, I didn’t see it coming. [Series creator] Liz Feldman really has the big picture in mind.”

While season two introduced heartbreak for Perez—thanks a lot, Michelle (Natalie Morales)—Riva enjoyed adding another dimension to the character. “We got to see Perez has a multilayered heart,” she added. “There is so much more to her. There is a real-life human story.”

Fingers crossed season three of Dead to Me hits Netflix sooner rather than later.
