DC Comics Will Introduce a New Nonbinary Superhero
An upcoming festive comic book from DC will mark the debut appearance of a new line-up of young superheroes known as Teen Justice. These next-generation characters, all of whom represent next-generation incarnations of existing icons in the DC canon, will be introduced in an eight-page story by Ivan Cohen and Eleonora Carlini in DC's Very Merry Multiverse—including a nonbinary person of color called Kid Quick.
Kid Quick, a.k.a. Jess Chambers, possesses the same super-speed powers as The Flash, and goes by they/them pronouns while fighting bad guys and saving the day.
"Not every superhero has to be male or female, or white, just because DC characters created in the golden and silver ages of comics pretty much all were," said Cohen. "I suggested that Kid Quick could be Earth-11's first gender-fluid character, and once editors saw Eleonora Carlini's terrific take on the character design, there was suddenly a lot of interest in them for stories beyond the Merry Multiverse Special in December."
Following their introduction in the Christmas-themed story, Kid Quick will then appear in DC's Future State: Justice League, a part of its ambitious, timeline-spanning two-month publishing event, where they will assume the official role of The Flash.
They join a small-but-growing number of nonbinary characters in the world of superhero comics, including The Aerie from DC's Suicide Squad series, and Snowflake and Safespace in Marvel Comics. However, given the news that Kid Quick will become The Flash in the Future State timeline, this is arguably the most prominent visibility a nonbinary character has been granted in the medium to date.
