Daylily Festival to return to Columbus Botanical Garden

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — They say, “April showers bring May flowers,” and that certainly seems to be the case at the Columbus Botanical Garden (CBG). As the garden gears up for its annual Daylily Festival, some of the flowers are already in full bloom.

“They look gorgeous,” Larry Miller, chairman of the Chattahoochee Valley Daylily Festival said as he stood amongst the flowers on May 15.

Over the past few months, the flowers planted have grown from individuals into what are known as ‘clumps,’ large groups of daylilies blooming together.

Annually, the daylily blooms hit their peak season in a 30-day period around the end of May and beginning of June.

The Daylily Festival, hosted annually on the first Saturday in June aligns with that window. This year, it will happen on July 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., however locals looking to check out the daylilies earlier can do so on a regular visit to CBG – there just may not be as many to see.

Miller explained hundreds of daylilies will be at the festival, including those sold by three daylily vendors at the event. Throughout the day, CBG will also be giving away daylilies to guests, as long as supplies last.

The crowning event of the festival, the daylily show will take place at 1:30 p.m. There will also be a daylily class, lawn games and arts and crafts opportunities.

Roughly 25 vendors, including those selling daylilies, will be on-site for the festival, as well as two food trucks, according to organizers.

Entry to the Daylily Festival costs differently for members and non-members. For non-members, entry costs $10 for adults and $5 for children aged 4 to 17. For members, adult tickets are $5 while children get in for free.

Tickets can be purchased on the CBG website or bought in-person at the CBG admissions booth on the day of the event.

I want everybody to come out, there’s a lot to do,” Miller said. “The garden will be beautiful and come out and have some fun.”

The annual Daylily Festival is put on as a collaboration between the Chattahoochee Valley Daylily Society, CBG and UGA Extension.
