Daycare worker accused of twisting, fracturing leg of 6-month-old baby
A North Carolina woman was arrested after she was accused of intentionally breaking an infant's leg at a daycare, WRAL reports.
According to an arrest warrant that was filed on Monday, Kimberly Sugg Boykin, 51, of Middlesex, faces a charge of felony negligent child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury following a March 23 incident in which she "willfully twisted the left femur" of a 6-month-old at Widewaters Learning Center.
Authorities said Boykin also failed to report the abuse despite "several opportunities to do so." The unidentified child allegedly suffered a fractured leg as a result.
Perhaps more troubling is the fact that Boykin's arrest is not the first time the day care has run into trouble. Officials from the state's Division of Child Development and Early Education has visited the center at least nine times since May 2017, records show. Six of those visits revealed 13 violations, all of which were purportedly addressed.
"Widewaters Learning Center cares deeply about the safety of our children, and we are committed to maintaining the highest standards for our employees," a spokesperson for Widewaters told WRAL, following Boykin's arrest. "We are actively investigating this situation involving a former employee, and we will continue to cooperate with the relevant authorities."
Earlier this month, a Florida day care worker was similarly charged with child neglect after four toddlers suffered leg fractures.
