Two wrongs don’t make a right, right? So begins our dilemma with a sign from a daycare in Houston posted by mom Juliana Farris Mazurkewicz that, with plenty of caps and underlines, tells parents to get off their phone and pay attention to their dang kids! Which of course, we understand. But after all, isn’t the saying “it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it?” And although “GET OFF YOUR PHONE!!!” does the job of communicating the message, we can’t say it does it well.

The sign has sent the internet into a whirlwind, with plenty of comments on the Facebook post applauding in agreement, and many openly disagreeing.

The main point against the sign? If a parent sent their child to a daycare in the first place, it’s probably because they have a job or something else that they also need to focus on.

The daycare seems to have the right intentions. After all, as a parent, you should absolutely pay attention to your child and the wonderful work they’re doing! And yes, many of us are on our phones too much, neglecting the present. But sometimes a last-minute email, an emergency phone call, or an urgent text message happens. And that’s just life in the 21st century! We applaud the intention behind this sign, but we cannot condone the means in which it was communicated.
