Da'vine Joy Randolph Sweeps Awards Season With Win for Supporting Actress at the 2024 Oscars
Da'vine Joy Randolph just completed a remarkable awards season sweep with tonight's win for Best Supporting Actress at the 2024 Academy Awards.
"God is so good," she began. "God is so good. You know, I think I was supposed to be doing this as a career. I started off as a singer, and my mother said to me, go across that street to that theater department: There's something for you there. And I thank my mother for doing that."
Randolph continued, "I thank you to all the people who have stepped in my path, and have been there for me. Who has ushered me and guided me. I am so grateful to all you beautiful people out here. For so long, I've always wanted to be different, and now I realize, I just need to be myself. And I thank you. I thank you for seeing me."
Randolph, who stars in The Holdovers as Mary Lamb, a cook at the fictional Barton Academy, previously won trophies at the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs, Critics' Choice Awards, SAG Awards, and many, many more for the role. Tonight, she accepted her first Oscar wearing a Louis Vuitton dress.
Randolph becomes just the 12th woman in the Best Supporting Actress category to complete the quintet of prestigious awards (Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA, SAG, and Critics' Choice); the last was Ariana DeBose for her performance as Anita in West Side Story. Others include Laura Dern for Marriage Story, Allison Janney for I, Tonya, Viola Davis for Fences, and Anne Hathaway for Les Misérables. (You can see a full list here on IMDb.)
Randolph previously described the awards season attention as "very surreal." She said, "I'm very grateful and I'm just trying to take it one step at a time. It can be very overwhelming. It's just really, really wild."
"It's also important to smell the roses at some point," Randolph added. "Like, Wow, we're here. Because I wasn't here before and now I am. I'm trying really hard to be in the moment. There’s gonna be some years when I'm working and I'm not here, but then I'll have these moments to look back on."
