David Fincher’s first film since 2020’s Oscar-nominated Mank is coming. It’s called The Killer, and it stars Michael Fassbender as an assassin who’s seriously fed up.

As per the official synopsis, “After a fateful near miss, an assassin battles his employers, and himself, on an international manhunt he insists isn't personal."

It sounds a bit like a Bourne movie, and somewhat cliché for an acclaimed director like Fincher, but if there’s anyone who can turn a by-the-numbers premise into something special, it’s the director of Zodiac, The Social Network, Fight Club, and Seven.

Based on a French graphic novel by author Alexis Nolent, The Killer sees Fincher reunite with long-term collaborators Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The Nine Inch Nails members composed the score for The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl, and Mank.

In addition, Fincher has enlisted screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker, who penned the screenplay for Seven, and Tilda Swinton, who stars alongside Fassbender.

The Killer will make its premiere at the 80th annual Venice Film Festival, which is held August 30 to September 9, and it’s got seriously stiff competition. Also appearing at the festival are Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two, Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, and Ridley Scott's Napoleon (we've detailed every battle in the Napoleon trailer here).

The Killer is launching on Netflix in November.
