Who Is Dave McCary, Emma Stone’s Fiancé (Slash Possible Husband)?

ICYMI: Emma Stone is nominated for a 2024 Oscar Award for Best Actress for Poor Things.

The nomination came after Stone won the 2024 Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. “I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this magical film experience and to have our Poor Things family recognized together is a dream,” the 35-year-old said, according to E! News. “Bella Baxter is my favorite character that I’ve ever had the honor of playing and the journey of making this film is one that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”

In honor of the Academy Awards on March 10, we have some questions about Emma Stone’s fiancé (or husband?).  For example, who is Dave McCary? Are they married or not? How did they meet? Here, seven things we know about Emma Stone’s partner.

1. He’s in a Sketch Comedy Group

Believe it or not, McCary got his start in a sketch comedy group. He grew up with comedian Kyle Mooney and they both attended the University of Southern California together. It was there that they met Nick Rutherford and Beck Bennett, who would become the two other founding members of their comedy troupe, Good Neighbor. The four of them started Good Neighbor in 2007 and went on to film a Comedy Central pilot, which was produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. Saturday Night Live caught wind of it and worked with Comedy Central to get the foursome out of their contract so they could come work on the iconic sketch show. The rest is history.

2. He Works on Saturday Night Live

McCary joined Saturday Night Live in season 39 as a segment director along with Mooney and Bennett (who joined as on-screen talent) and Rutherford, who became a staff writer.

In an interview with The Chicago Tribune, McCary revealed that his co-workers are his biggest support system. “Working on SNL, you can have a really stressful experience or a really bad week, and I could see how much of a nightmare that could be for someone who doesn’t have a network of buddies going through that with them,” he said.

3. He Directed a Film

McCary directed the Lonely Island-produced comedy-drama Brigsby Bear in 2017. The film, which premiered at Sundance and was ultimately released by Sony Pictures Classics, stars Mooney, Mark Hamill, Greg Kinnear, Matt Walsh and more.

“We have been close friends since grade school, and this film is a culmination of years of making low budget videos and music together,” McCary said during an interview at Cannes Film Festival. “We were incredibly inspired by children’s television and film from the ’80s and ’90s, especially low budget straight-to-video productions.”

4. He Met Stone in 2016

The two have been immensely private about their relationship (rightfully so). As a result, there aren’t a ton of details out there about their romance. We know that the duo met when Stone hosted SNL in late 2016 and starred in the sketch “Wells for Boys,” which McCary directed. They started dating several months later. Since then, they’ve made rare public appearances together, never quite flaunting their relationship—that is, until McCary and Stone shared a ring selfie snapped shortly after the proposal.

5. He Proposed in 2019

Although speculation about the couple’s engagement arose in April 2019 when Stone stepped out wearing what appeared to be an engagement ring, she quickly shut the rumors down on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. It wasn’t until December 4, 2019 that McCary confirmed the couple’s engagement via an Instagram post (which has since been deleted).

6. They Share a Daughter Together

In March 2021, Stone and McCary welcomed their first child together, a daughter named Louise Jean McCary. People broke the pregnancy news in January 2021 shortly after Stone was seen in Los Angeles with a baby bump. Since then, they have kept Louise out of the public eye.

7. They Are (Most Likely) Married

Stone sparked rumors that she secretly married McCary back in May of 2020. While the couple has remained relatively private about their relationship, during a video interview, the actress appeared to have swapped her pearl engagement ring for a gold wedding band.

Then, during an interview on the Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine YouTube channel, Stone spoke about being diagnosed with an anxiety disorder at a young age. At one point, a mental-health expert joked with Stone about marrying an anxious man. Her response? “Thankfully, I didn’t do that,” she said. Didn’t—as in, past tense.

Neither Stone nor McCary have confirmed the marriage rumors, so looks like we’ll need to wait for answers.
