Daughter DIYs Parents' Kitchen Cabinets With Proper Prep So the Paint Sticks

When it comes to DIY home renovations, Molly Miller (@therenegadehome) knows a thing or two about how to revamp your living space - starting with the kitchen cabinets. And she showed her prowess once again, transforming her parents' dated kitchen cabinets into something straight out of a design magazine.

Prep starts with thorough cleaning. In Molly's case, she reached for TSP, her trusted degreasing cleaner. However, any good quality degreaser will do the trick. Remember folks, your final paint job is only as good as your prep work. So, roll up those sleeves and scrub away!

After your cabinets are gleaming clean, it’s time to sand. Molly uses a Gator block and 220 grit sandpaper for those small nooks and combines it with an orbital sander for larger areas. This DIY whiz says, "Simple sanding will set your paint job up for success."

Next up, it's the deglosser. Skip sanding and turn to handy helpers like Liquid Sandpaper or M1 Gloss Remover for large jobs such as kitchen cabinets. They scuff the surface just enough so the paint adheres better.

Molly’s favorite painters tape? Frog tape and Scotch blue - a prime example of when investing in the right materials can make a massive difference. Remember, it's about working smarter, not harder.

Molly insists that primer is non-negotiable. She prefers using BIN Shellac for its superior stain-blocking properties that prevent any nasty surprises from seeping through your fresh paint.

When it comes to paint, Molly swears by Sherwin Williams' Emerald Urethane Enamel. For her, it’s hard to improve upon its self-leveling and durability qualities. However, she has also given a shout-out to Behr Alkyd Enamel for its affordability without compromising quality.

As for tools, Molly recommends using a Purdy XL 2.0 or 3.0 angled brush for precision and a Purdy mini roller frame with an ultra finish 3/8 nap roller for a smooth as silk, spray-like finish.

Seeing Molly's impressive results, we’re reminded: the key to success lies in the prep stage. Investing the time and effort in the correct preparation will yield a professional-grade result - just ask Molly's parents!
