A month after a bike accident, Dartmouth College football coach Eugene “Buddy” Teevens was forced to have his right leg amputated. “As Buddy navigates through the healing of his injuries, he is experiencing many positive improvements. Unfortunately, as a result of the accident, Buddy's right leg was amputated due to the severity of the injury,” his wife, Kristen, said in a statement today released through the university.

The Teevens’ were riding home together after having dinner at a local restaurant in St. Augustine, FL on the evening of March 20 when the driver of a pickup truck hit Buddy as he was trying to cross state road A1A, according to documents obtained by the Valley News.

According to the police report, Teevens’ condition was listed as “critical” and he was transported to Orange Park Medical Center. The report notes that he was struck at 8:40 p.m. by a 40-year-old female driver going 50 mph.

“We would like to thank everyone for the incredible outpouring of love and support for Buddy. It has been nothing short of amazing and we are so grateful,” Kristen Teevens said in the statement. “He is alert and communicating with us and ready for transfer to a premier rehab facility to continue healing. Spinal cord injuries are challenging, and if anybody is up for the challenge, it is Buddy. We appreciate your continued respect of our privacy as we navigate this ongoing recovery process as a family.”

Teevens is Dartmouth’s all-time winningest coach, and has been a Division I head football coach for more than 30 years, including 23 at his alma mater Dartmouth. Teeven also coached at Tulane and Stanford University.
