Move over, Virgin River—it looks like there's a new number-one show on Netflix. While the popular drama series has been dominating on the streaming platform ever since its fourth season dropped back in late July, there's now a brand-new series that has quickly moved into the top spot: The Sandman.
The Sandman is based upon a bestselling DC comic of the same name, which follows Dream (also known as Morpheus), a powerful being who controls all dreams, but finds himself captured for over 100 years. When he eventually gets free, Dream must now attempt to reclaim his position as the ruler of the kingdom of Dreaming, and this is precisely where the TV show starts off.
Although The Sandman only premiered on Friday, it has quickly become the most-watched show on the platform, flying past other popular titles like Stranger Things and highly-anticipated new shows like Uncoupled. Check out the trailer below.
While the Sandman comic has been highly praised, and was even deemed a “new classic” by Entertainment Weekly, it seems the show is just as gripping. On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season has a “fresh” score of 86 percent, and based on the trailer alone, we're already getting chills.
Tom Sturridge portrays the titular character, and in the clip, he says, “Your waking world is shaped by dreams. Dreams and nightmares that I create, and which I must control.” *shivers*
Along with Sturridge, The Sandman also stars Boyd Holbrook, Vivienne Acheampong, Patton Oswalt, Jenna Coleman, Joely Richardson and more. It was developed by Neil Gaiman, who wrote the comic, as well as David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg.
All 10 episodes of the first season are available to stream now. Don't mind us while we go watch.
