Masterson was accused in March 2017 of raping three women in separate incidents between 2001 and 2003 when That 70’s Show was still on air. He was charged in 2020. The actor, who played Stephen Hyde, pleaded not guilty to all three charges in 2021 and went on trial, though it was declared a mistrial in December 2022 after the jury was deadlocked, i.e., they couldn’t unanimously agree on whether to convict him for the third rape.

The three women who claimed Masterson assaulted them through the Church of Scientology met with journalist Tony Ortega. He posted the allegations as he claimed that one victim approached former Scientologist Leah Remini and told her what allegedly happened. The woman was then advised to file a police report by Remini, according to Ortega.

“I met with the LAPD. I met with Detective Reyes [of the robbery-homicide division, who was assigned the case], and I told her these victims deserve to be heard,” Remini told Ortega at the time. “I asked her to do the right thing by these girls, and I told her that the world is watching.”

Masterson’s rep issued a statement to Us Weekly denying all claims of sexual assault that same month. “We are aware of [the victim]’s 16-year-old allegations. It was only after [the victim] was in contact with Leah Remini that she made allegations of sexual assault by Mr. Masterson,” the rep said at the time. “The alleged incident occurred in the middle of their six-year relationship, after which she continued to be his longtime girlfriend.” The accusers claimed that Masterson and the church engaged in stalking, physical invasion of privacy and conspiracy to obstruct justice after the women reported their allegations against the New York native to the Los Angeles Police Department in 2016 and 2017.

In September 2022, Masterson was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo issued an assessment of Masterson before she dispatched him to prison. “Mr. Masterson, I know that you’re sitting here steadfast in your claims of innocence and thus no doubt feeling victimized by a justice system that has failed you,” she said, per NBC News. “But Mr. Masterson, you are not the victim here.”

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said he applauded the women for “coming forward and participating in this process,” adding that he hoped it encouraged others to come forward about instances of abuse in Hollywood. “My hope is that this sentence will somehow bring them peace and that their bravery will be an example to others,” he said. “One of my top priorities is to ensure that Los Angeles will no longer be a hunting ground for Hollywood elite who feel entitled to prey on women.”

Shawn Holley, a lawyer for Masterson, told reporters outside the courtroom that she was “very disappointed” in the sentence, noting that a team of lawyers had reviewed the case and found “a number of significant evidentiary and constitutional issues” that they planned to use in appeals. “Though we have great respect for the jury, and for our system of justice, sometimes they get it wrong — and that’s what happened here,” Holley said, noting that Masterson maintains his innocence.

Wilmer Valderrama’s Reaction to Danny Masterson’s Case

Wilmer Valderrama did not respond to Danny Masterson’s case and did not write a letter of support. However, he was constantly mentioned in his former personal assistant’s letter of support per Deadline.

Daniel Acuna, who worked with Valderrama on That ’70s Show wrote, “He constantly warned his coworkers, like Wilmer, and reminded me as a part of the group that we needed to all act like professionals and be good citizens. “If one of us gets in trouble or gets caught in the spotlight for something negative, the whole cast and crew could suffer. Put the show first and your coworkers first – make wise choices.” … Wilmer had a tendency to spend too much money, and “throw it away” on big dinners, nightclubs, alcohol, travel and friends. Danny would encourage Wilmer to be more frugal and save for the future – when Wilmer continued his spending ways, Danny told me: “Look out for him. I know he likes to pick up the tab for all of his friends, but ask everyone to throw in 20 bucks. Those small things will make the rest of his friends realize it’s not always a free ride and they need to chip in. If Wilmer continues down this path, he will be broke by 30. He was always looking out for all of us.”

Wilmer Valderrama’s Howard Stern Interview

After Danny Masterson’s sentence was announced, Wilmer Valderrama’s infamous Howard Stern Show interview re-emerged per Rolling Stone. In the interview, Valderrama made crude comments about his ex-girlfriends.

He boasted about his sex life with his ex Ashlee Simpson. “It was a little louder than that,” he said while a moaning sound effect played in the background. He also commented on “what helped” him gain the attention of women, Stern chimes in “roofies,” to which the actor jokingly replies, “One… that’s the silent fact.” He claimed that he took Mandy Moore’s virginity, “The sex with Mandy was good, but it wasn’t like warm apple pie.” Valderrama also boasted about his giant penis size saying that he was “cursed with this gift.”

Wilmer Valderrama & Demi Lovato’s Relationship

In her 2017 documentary, Simply Complicated, Lovato recalled her relationship with Valderrama, whom she dated on and off throughout their time together. “I think it was love at first sight,” she said. “We connected on a level that I’ve never connected with anybody before. He was just my rock, my everything.” She met the Handy Manny voice actor when she was just 17 and he was 29. They confirmed their relationship after she turned 18.

“I think what I went through is I had a phase of dating older men and dating older guys because of my daddy issues, obviously. And now I’m at a place where I’m in an amazing relationship,” she said in a Howard Stern interview on September 13, 2023. “I can say with confidence that my daddy issues aren’t anything that are inside of me anymore, and I think there’s a few signs to that. I’m with a partner that is my age, essentially. I look back on the past and think, ‘That’s gross.’”

She continued: “For me, I was a teenager, and so, to me, that’s gross. If you are 50 and 60, you’re fine. Even 30 and 40, that’s not gross at all. But I think that when you’re in those development years, you should absolutely not be with somebody that is older than you by that much. It’s just unhealthy and toxic.”
