Dangerous Liaisons Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

Before the first season premiered, Starz renewed its adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons for a second season. In a surprising reversal, midway through the first season, Starz announced Dangerous Liasons would be canceled.

Deadline reports that executive producers are trying to find a new home for the period drama. In an initial statement about the renewal last month, executive producer Colin Callender promised that series creator Harriet Warner's "brilliant vision for season two" would "see our world expand and the relationships between our characters deepen in thrilling, dangerous new ways."

Warner previously shared that she has a multi-season plan for the show. Season one is billed as a prequel of sorts to the much-adapted novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, and stars Alice Englert and Nicholas Denton as young incarnations of the infamous warring lovers, Marquise de Merteuil (Englert) and the Vicomte de Valmont (Denton). The first eight episodes will focus on the characters' origin story, beginning with their meeting on the eve of revolution in Paris.

"Over the course of hopefully multiple seasons, our characters will get to that point that we meet them in the novel, of real moral compromise and corruption," Warner said this summer. "We go with them on that journey in Season 1, but there is still innocence."

"Dangerous Liaisons is addictive, provocative and beautifully rendered," Kathryn Busby, president of original programming at Starz, said in a statement about the show's initial renewal. "This prelude to the famed 18th century novel illuminates pre-revolution Paris at its most decadent. We are confident that by the end of season one viewers will be craving more scheming and seduction."

Starz did not release a statement about the cancelation.

Season two was scheduled to begin production in early 2023 in Prague, Czech Republic, and that may still happen if producers find a new home for the show.

If it does get saved from cancelation, we can expect to see Englert and Denton return as the central duo, and it's safe to bet that a lot of supporting players could also be back (depending on their fates during season one, of course). The first season cast features Lesley Manville as Genevieve de Merteuil, Carice van Houten as Jacqueline de Montrachet, Paloma Faith as Florence de Regnier, Michael McElhatton as Jean de Merteuil, Kosar Ali as Victoire, Nathanael Saleh as Azolan, Hakeem Kae-Kazim as Majordome, and Hilton Pelser as Gabriel Carrè.

The first season of Dangerous Liasons is currently airing on Starz. Despite its cancelation, the last three episodes will air as scheduled.
