'Dancing With the Stars' Is Not Coming Back in Early 2020, Reports Say
Dancing With the Stars will not be coming back in the spring of 2020.
Just like last year, ABC has decided to nix the dance series from its spring lineup. Instead, American Idol will fill the Monday night time slot for part of the third season's run. This is the second time DWTS has taken a year-long break since the competition show began a spring-fall schedule in 2007.
Last year's decision to forego a spring season came on the heels of Bobby Bones's controversial first-place finish. As folks who watched the show know, the country music radio host consistently scored low marks throughout the season but ended up winning thanks to fan votes. This inspired producers to tweak the way scores were calculated for the most recent season, which was intended to give judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Len Goodman more of a say.
But that controversy aside, ABC faced even more widespread backlash when the show announced that former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer would be in the 2019 cast. Countless fans even threatened to "boycott" the network and dance show over his participation.
Does this mean Dancing With the Stars is getting canceled, or will it come back later in 2020?
If we had to guess, skipping the spring cycle of DWTS is not a sure sign that the dance show will be gone forever. While no announcements have yet been made, our best guess is, like last year, Dancing With the Stars will return in the fall of 2020.
With that being said though, ABC may have to continue to make formatting changes to revamp their rating numbers. According to Nielsen figures, the 2019 season averaged a .86 rating in the 18-49 age demo and 6.7 million viewers -- a drop from the 2018 season, which earned a .93 rating and attracted 7.12 million viewers overall. What's more, the year before earned a 1.37 rating and 9.3 million viewers.
