  • Carrie Ann Inaba revealed she was hospitalized for an emergency appendectomy.

  • “I realize after speaking with my doctor that it could have been much worse,” she wrote.

  • The 55 year old initially ignored her abdomen pain and urged fans not to follow suit, but to bring any intense pain to a doctor’s attention immediately.

As someone who lives with consistent autoimmune flare-ups from Sjogren’s syndrome, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, Carrie Ann Inaba is used to unexplained pain. So, when she recently felt a sharp pang in her abdomen — and it persisted — she didn’t immediately address it. But she wishes she did. The Dancing With the Stars host ended up being hospitalized for an appendectomy with “a few complications” and endured a four-night hospital stay. She shared her experience on Instagram, urging fans to always tend to health red flags right away.

“I had an emergency appendectomy last week and while it’s been quite a painful experience, I also know it’s a gift to even feel this pain. I realize after speaking with my doctor that it could have been much worse,” she wrote.

“Appendicitis attacks happen suddenly and seemingly out of nowhere. And when you are in that much pain, the last thing you want to do is go anywhere,” she continued. “And when you have [an] autoimmune disease, you are often having strange health occurrences that no one can explain or help you with so sometimes, you try to wait it out, like I did. I was wrong.”

She went on to explain that after the onset of pain, she experienced “violent vomiting” and the inability to stand due to “excruciating pain.” In the accompanying video, she documented herself from her hospital bed, adding that she was specifically diagnosed with acute gangrenous appendicitis and will undergo four to six weeks of recovery.

According to the National Library of Medicine, an appendectomy is the surgical removal of the appendix, “a small, finger-shaped organ that branches off from the first part of the large intestine.” When the appendix becomes inflamed or infected, also known as appendicitis, removal is sometimes necessary. Symptoms of appendicitis include pain around the belly button that moves to the lower abdomen, chills, nausea and vomiting, fever, diarrhea and hard stools.

Fans flooded Inaba’s comments with well wishes and support. “Omg. So glad you’re ok! What a scary experience. ❤️❤️❤️” one person commented. “Hope you feel better! Glad you caught it in time🙏” another added. “😮❤️ hope you are comfortable and healing,” someone else wrote.

To end her post, Inaba asked fans not to follow her example, but to address pain as soon as it occurs. “If you have pain in your abdomen, please have it checked out,” she wrote. “It could be something very serious.”

We’re wishing Inaba a quick recovery and hope she feels better soon!
