'Dancing With the Stars' Fans Are Raging at Derek Hough's Decision Last Night

From Good Housekeeping

  • Dancing With the Stars season 29 aired its second episode on ABC Tuesday night.

  • At the end of the night, two contestants faced elimination: Carole Baskin and Charles Oakley.

  • Judge Derek Hough made the call to save Carole and send Charles home, which prompted DWTS fans to freak out on Twitter.

  • Fellow judge Carrie Ann Inaba also voted Carole through, citing her improved score as the reason.

According to Dancing With the Stars Twitter, new judge Derek Hough made the wrong call last night.

After combining last week's scores with this week's and taking viewer votes into account, Tiger King star Carole Baskin and her partner Pasha Pashkov and former NBA star Charles Oakley and his partner Emma Slater ended up each with a combined 27 out of 60 possible points.

Because they were both tied at the bottom of the leaderboard, judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Derek ultimately got to decide which season 29 contestant would be the first to go home. After deliberation, Carrie Ann opted to save Carole, while Bruno went with Charles, leaving the big decision up to Derek. At the very end of the broadcast, Derek chose Carole, eliminating Charles from the competition.

Immediately after Derek selected his pick, DWTS Twitter erupted in outrage. "I’m sorry ... BUT DEREK HOUGH SAVED CAROLE BASKIN?!!!?!!!?! WHY???!!!!!," one fan wrote. "Booo Derek only picked Carole because of ratings," another alleged. "DEREK how DARE YOU KEEP CAROLE BASKIN HERE," a different viewer declared.

Though Derek didn't have a ton of time to offer up an explanation for his decision, Carrie Ann ultimately went with Carole and Pasha because she believed "they did better this week in their dance." For week two of the competition, Carole scored a 16 out of 30 for her Viennese Waltz. Charles, meanwhile, scored just one point below the Tiger King star, earning a 15 out of 30 for his lively Cha Cha.

Still, Carole will have to pick up the pace if she's going to make it past next week. Going into round three, she's at the bottom of the pack, trailing four points behind Selling Sunset star Chrishell Stause and seven behind Grammy-winning rapper Nelly. Meanwhile, Bachelorette star Kaitlyn Bristowe and One Day at a Time actress Justina Machado are sitting comfortably tied for first with 42 points.

Of course, all of this could change next Monday night. But one thing's for sure: If you don't want to leave the fate of your favorite contestants up to Derek, you have to vote!
