Dakota Johnson is Madame Web in the first trailer for the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing's most enigmatic heroines.

Cassandra Webb is a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures...if they can all survive a deadly present.

Directed by S. J. Clarkson, whose previous credits include episodes of Orange is the New Black, Jessica Jones and Succession, Madame Web is described by Sony as "a switch from the typical genre".

Sydney Sweeney, Emma Roberts, Isabela Merced, Adam Scott and Celeste O'Connor also star alongside Johnson.

The trailer certainly doesn't look like your average superhero movie. It packs in elements of the thriller genre with comedy and suspense sprinkled throughout the three minutes, leaving audiences wondering what will happen next.

The film is executive produced by Adam Merims, whose previous credits include Academy Award winners King Richard, Little Women and First Man.
