Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin Have Apparently Been Engaged for ‘Years’

Is anyone really surprised that Dakota Johnson, the incredibly private, incredibly aloof nepo baby daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, got engaged to longtime boyfriend Chris Martin and then didn’t tell us? Please.

After some speculation over the past week, a source confirmed to People on March 8 that the Coldplay frontman, 47, and the Madame Web star, 34, “got engaged years ago, but were in no rush to get married.”

Martin and Johnson began dating in 2017, and she moved into his home in Malibu in 2021. At various times during their nearly seven-year relationship, they have sparked engagement rumors (2021) and baby rumors (2018) as well as breakup rumors (2019); however, their reps have always been tight-lipped.

In fact, it’s the couple’s friends, as well as Martin’s ex, Gwyneth Paltrow, who’ve shared the most intimate glimpses of their life together. Paltrow regularly espouses her love for Johnson in interviews and on Instagram, and Olivia Wilde once shared an adorable video of the couple goofing off. We truly, literally, love to see it.

Recently Johnson opened up about her life with Martin in an interview with Bustle. More than she’s ever done before, the actor discussed her musician boyfriend’s career (she loves watching him perform), her “step” children, Apple and Moses Martin, and her blended family with Paltrow and her husband, Brad Falchuk.

“I think because I grew up in [having a blended family], it’s come more naturally, but I wouldn’t have it any other way really,” Johnson said. “I really wouldn’t. I love it. It feels very honest. It feels really authentic. No one’s hiding anything.”

It’s far from tea, but it is something. And when it comes to Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin’s very private life, we’ll take what we can get.
