Based on the novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Daisy Jones & the Six tells the story of the rise and fall of an iconic band led by Daisy Jones (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne (Sam Claflin). The ten-episode series is structured as the band members giving interviews in present day, narrating what happened in the heyday of their career.

The TV show is a pretty faithful adaptation of Jenkins Reid's novel, albeit with some key changes, so it's unlikely Daisy Jones & the Six will return for a second season. The show, which received nine Emmy nominations, is categorized as a limited series, which means it had a definitive ending when the finale dropped. "There could be more story to tell if that was something people wanted," creator Scott Neustadter tells Town & Country, "but time will tell if there's any interest in such a thing."

When asked about what comes next following the final scene, star Riley Keough joked to T&C, "Well, we'll have to find out on season two! I'm kidding, I'm joking, there's no season two. We keep pitching it to Amazon via interviews." Following her Emmy nomination for playing Daisy, Keough told Deadline, "It was such a wonderful experience. I think all of us would love to work together in any capacity again. I don’t know how much room they left for that, but I definitely would work with everyone on the show again."

Reid isn't ruling out a second season. "I think we’re in a really fortunate position where we have a story that is final, and has an ending that feels really good," the author says. "I would only open that back up if it felt like there was a story here that we have to tell. Have I been thinking about what that is? I certainly have."

She continued, "To see the performances that you have from this cast, and specifically Riley and Sam, and be willing to walk away from that without asking yourself whether you could give them another opportunity to dig into these characters would be very silly. I’m not so stupid as to not recognize what we have in the two of them. So it’s definitely on my mind."

In a later interview, Neustadter said he'd love to keep telling the story of Daisy Jones and the Six. "What’s cool is that the show does have an ending that hopefully is satisfying. We answered all the questions that we raised, but I do think on the way out the door we asked a few new questions. That’s always my favorite kind of ending," he said. "There’s opportunity to keep telling the story; obviously we’d want to talk with Taylor." In another interview, he said the decision to make the characters in their 40s (versus their 70s in the book) was intentional, explaining, "It’s super fun to sit and talk to Taylor for hours about where we think we could take this next. It was a calculated move to move [the flash forwards] to their 40s. There’s a lot of life left to live, so there could be a future."

In fact, Sam Claflin has even pitched his ideas for a second season. "Whether they listened or not it’s not up for me to decide, but the will is there," Claflin told the Los Angeles Times.

Many of Reid's novels take place within the same universe; so the events of Daisy Jones happen in the same world as The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Malibu Rising, Carrie Soto is Back, and short story Evidence of the Affair. For example, in Carrie Soto, Daisy Jones is mentioned, and in Malibu Rising, a few characters from Daisy are mentioned by name, as is the record label Runner Records.

"It all started very organically; there wasn’t a larger plan," Jenkins Reid said of her literary universe. "I just needed the name of a magazine in an initial draft of Daisy Jones and thought, 'Magazine names are hard. Why don’t I just use the one I already made up for Evelyn Hugo?' And that ended up taking me on a pretty epic journey that has made me realize how much fun it is to populate your own alternate cultural history. It’s been a very big surprise and a wonderful creative outlet to make up movie stars and movies and albums and magazines and swimsuit models of another dimension."

There are adaptations in the works of Evelyn Hugo (on Netflix) and Malibu Rising (on Hulu). However, since those shows will take place on different streaming platforms with different creators, it's unlikely any of the actors who star in Daisy Jones and the Six will reprise their roles.
