Is Daisy Jones & The Six is based on a true story?

In a word, no. Author Taylor Jenkins Reid has confirmed that her novel is a work of fiction and not based on any true events. However, she has admitted that she found inspiration in Fleetwood Mac, specifically the relationship between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. In an essay written for the Hello Sunshine blog, Taylor talked about the comparison between the real band and her fictional characters.

The author recalled watching a Fleetwood Mac concert on MTV in the 1990s and being taken by the way Nicks and Buckingham looked at each other while singing their hit song "Landslide." She remembers thinking, "Oh, they’re in love with each other" and was surprised when her mother explained that they were no longer a couple. When she began researching bands before writing Daisy Jones, she returned to that video. She explained, "When I decided I wanted to write a book about rock 'n' roll, I kept coming back to that moment when Lindsey watched Stevie sing 'Landslide.' How it looked so much like two people in love. And yet, we’ll never truly know what lived between them. I wanted to write a story about that, about how the lines between real life and performance can get blurred, about how singing about old wounds might keep them fresh."

While they aren't based on an actual group, the cast formed a real band during filming, and the soundtrack is even available on vinyl. The album, Aurora, features songs from the show's soundtrack.
