From Women's Health

Priyanka Chopra Jonas has famously lustrous hair. The actress, activist, and budding author (her memoir Unfinished is coming out in January) wasn't always rich in good hair days, however. Growing up, her hair wasn't her source of confidence because she didn't know how to manage it. "My hair was waist-length and it was curly and frizzy and [there was] lots of it...it took me a really long time to figure that out," she told Fashion in 2018. Working in the entertainment industry, after catapulting to fame as the winner of the 2000 Miss World pageant, allowed her to learn what she needs to keep her hair healthy. And, it's a really big priority for Priyanka to this day.

“I feel like when my hair is having a bad hair day, I’m having a bad day. My confidence doesn’t feel as great," she said. "I’ve been blessed with really thick, voluminous, awesome hair, if I may say so myself. I usually don’t have hair problems…unless I do. Then it really affects me if it falls flat, if it feels too dry, and doesn’t feel healthy.”

So, how does she avoid those dreaded bad hair days? Keep reading.

She washes her hair daily.

Many people choose to skip days between washes, and Priyanka is not one of them. "I love the feeling of fingers through hair and freshly conditioned hair," she explained to ELLE in 2016. "I like the feeling of touchable-ness. So [to maintain that], I like to wash my hair every day or every two days, at least. I think it's really important to make sure that your hair is well taken care of, moisturized, nourished, just like the body."

As for which shampoo she uses, back in 2017 she told Popsugar her favorite was Pantene's Smooth and Sleek. "I'm very, very possessive of my hair. It's very important to me. It truly is my crown and glory. When I tried the shampoo, I loved that I didn't even use the conditioner to feel like my fingers would go right through my hair," she said."And I have really thick hair! So it takes a lot for my hair to get thin. It also didn't dry out my hair.

She is a big fan of coconut oil and scalp massages.

Highly influenced by Indian beauty traditions passed down to her, Priyanka says coconut oil is one of her hair's secret weapons. She shared with Vogue in 2017 that her grandmother or mom used to sit her down and use oil on her hair and then leave it in braids. “Coconut oil is healthy for the scalp and the growth of hair, [making it] longer and stronger," she said. "I heat up the oil a little bit and do a coconut-oil massage, then I wrap it with a hot towel, so it soaks [into] the scalp. I do it twice a month, and then you just shampoo and condition it normally. I guess thanks to that, I have extremely luscious hair that can stand up against the brutality of my profession!" She does this treatment at least twice a month, sometimes leaving the oil in overnight.

Speaking to Fashion magazine in 2018, Priyanka elaborated on why she loves indulging in a scalp massage. "A scalp massage is so important because it increases circulation of blood in your hair and it makes the roots thicker," she said. "Your roots come out healthier and your hair grows back a little bit better. Or at least that’s what we’ve been told."

She does a weekly hair mask.

"I do two or three shoots a day and my hair gets blown out every morning, so it really needs to be cared for," she told Into the Gloss in 2015. "Every week, I try to do a conditioning mask, which is the Kiehl's Olive Fruit Oil Deeply Repairative Hair Pak. They have amazing hydrating masks, and I use them as often as I remember," she said.

Sometimes the hair mask is a DIY recipe.

Priyanka shared a video of herself making a mask her mom and grandma passed on to her. It contains full fat yogurt, one teaspoon of honey, and one egg. "Let it sit in your hair for 30 min and rinse with warm water," she said. "Disclaimer: while this works wonders (for me), it doesn’t smell the best. You may need to shampoo twice to remove all the yogurt, and then condition as usual."

She also uses this drugstore mask.

As a face of Pantene, Priyanka has professed her love for the brand's 3 Minute Miracle product. "I actually thought that it was a special treatment that you use once or twice a week like a mask, but it’s not, it’s a daily treatment. They call it a miracle because it really is. I’m pretty diligent with it," she shared with Fashion.

Her hair health starts from the inside-out.

"It is obviously very important to have the right vitamins, especially for hair and nails," she told Popsugar. While she doesn't follow a specific diet, she said, "What I try and do is to eat lots of greens and make sure I have lots of iron. I think that's very important for your skin and for your hair." In a 2020 interview for Women's Health, Priyanka elaborated more on her wellness habits: "I make sure I eat right, getting salads, lots of veggies. I think that's really important. I make sure I keep my water bottle with me all the time and I always have to refill it. As soon as I finish it, I like top it off again. I feel like what you put inside of your body reflects in what you see outside: How you eat, how much rest you can get, how much water you drink," she said.

Off-duty, she leaves her hair alone.

"I'm so busy all the time that I don't have the luxury of taking hours and going to a hair salon and going to get my hair done," she told ELLE. She echoed that sentiment in Into the Gloss: "If I have the option to style my hair, I just won't. Today it was done for shoots, but I like it just up in a bun. I like that style with high heels and a topknot. Maybe that's bad to say, but that's all I can do."

She gets regular trims.

"Whenever I get split ends, I try and get a quick cut to keep my hair healthy so that it keeps growing," she said in her ELLE interview. She also likes to get her hair cut in layers. "When you get your hair layered, it's usually for a lot more volume," she shared with Popsugar. "This is great, too, if you like big hair. You can have that va va voom blowout."
