Cyclist Richard Wanstall, 54, of Marblehead, Massachusetts was struck by driver Alex Goss, 27, of East Haven, Vermont at around 9 a.m. Saturday morning, during the Rasputitsa gravel race in Burke, Vermont. According to police reports, the crash was head-on and occurred when Wanstall crossed into the northbound lane. In a statement, Vermont State Police said, “At this time, neither speed nor impairment are believed to be contributing factors in the collision.” The incident remains under investigation.

Although the race was not canceled, it was rerouted, and participants became aware of the crash throughout the day. Many reported a somber tone. The race organizers halted celebratory social media posts, and released a statement on Instagram and Facebook, “We are deeply saddened by the news that one of our community members died today, after colliding with a vehicle while on course. We do not have any information at this time other than what the state police have publicly released so far, but we will reach out to our community with updates as we learn more.”

Rasputitsa has been running since 2014, and has a reputation of being welcoming to and supportive of all cyclists. The event features three course distances: 100K, 70K, and 40K, to encourage as many people as possible to participate. It’s known for its muddy, grueling climbs and its party-like atmosphere. Wanstall was taking on the 100 km. course. A dedicated cyclist and father of four children, he had made the 3-hour drive the night before, for the 8 a.m. race start. Along with more than 1,800 other riders from around the country, Wanstall was excited for the challenging course.

Race director Heidi Myers stated that she and all race organizers were focused on supporting the family and all riders who witnessed the scene.

The Vermont State Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have other information to contact them at 802-241-5000.
