Magnus White was a star. He had an incredible knack for riding bikes, but he was also just an incredibly passionate young person. He set goals, worked hard, and encouraged others. His life was cut unnecessarily short on Saturday, July 29, when he was struck and killed while out on a training ride near his home in Boulder, Colorado.

White was set to race in the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships on August 10 in Glasgow, Scotland. He would then begin his senior year in high school at the end of the month.

Magnus leaves behind his parents Jill and Michael and his brother Eero, along with countless teammates, friends, and family members worldwide.

Members of the cycling community, Colorado leaders, friends, and family have been remembering and commemorating White’s life this week. Colorado Governor Jared Polis posted on social media, “We commemorate the life of Magnus White, a 17-year old cyclist who died tragically when he was hit by a car while cycling in Boulder. Our hearts are with his family and the entire US cycling community. Please remember to give cyclists space as you drive.”

Former professional cyclist Alison Tetrick, who was recently hit by the driver of a truck and survived the incident, posted, “I’ve been to a lot of hospitals and a lot of doctors after my crash. But I am here. I am alive. I have no words for such a tragic loss of a young talented cyclist just doing what they love. This should not be our reality.”

Former WorldTour racer, Alex Howes, told Bicycling, “I only met Magnus briefly. He was a good kid and a heck of a lot of fun to watch on the bike. The boy could ride.”

In a statement from Magnus’ parents, Michael and Jill, they said, “Magnus’s passion for cycling started at age 2 with his first strider bike. He started racing at the young age of 8. He was an incredibly self-motivated cyclist who was just reaching his potential.”

“Our pride for Magnus goes beyond his accomplishments as a cyclist and student. He held his character and determination to the highest of standards, which he carried through everything he did in life. He touched the lives of so many people and in time we will find a way to honor his legacy.”

The GoFundMe for the White family has continued to grow, now exceeding $120,000, with people from around the world mourning the loss.
