We'll show you how to create this Valentine's Day card box from a cardboard shipping package—we covered ours with crepe paper to give it new life. Remember to add a hole for easy valentine collecting, and give your unicorn box magical embellishments like a gold horn, pretty felt flowers, and eyelashes made with whatever materials you have on hand.

How to Make the Unicorn Valentine's Day Box

Supplies Needed

  • Black cardstock

Step-by-Step Directions

Follow these easy directions to make an insanely cute Valentine's Day card box for a kid's classroom valentine exchange. You can totally make this valentine holder last-minute—the project takes only 45 minutes.

Step 1: Cut and Cover Box

Start this clever valentine card box by choosing a cardboard box that's the right size for a valentine collection. You can use a shoebox or old Amazon shipping box—any cardboard container that's large enough to hold valentines will work. Stand the box up on one of the shorter sides and use a crafts knife to cut a hole in the top. We cut a long rectangle that measures just over 5 inches long and about an inch wide so all standard cards and envelopes will fit.

To cover the box, use a large sheet of crepe paper to wrap the box just as you would wrap a gift, securing the edges with hot glue at the back and on the bottom. To wrap the top without covering the hole you made for valentines, fold each of the four flaps into the hole and secure to the underside of the top with more hot glue. You may need to make a few extra cuts to trim excess paper.

Step 2: Add Toppers

Every unicorn needs a gold horn! We made a simple cone by rolling metallic gold cardstock and hot-gluing to hold the seam together at the back. We hot-glued the horn to the top of our box, then covered the base with these insanely easy felt flowers. We love the gold and pink color scheme, but you can use any color cardstock and felt for your box.

Step 3: Make a Face

Finish your unicorn by giving him or her a fun face. You can use cut felt, paper, markers, or paint to give your unicorn a one-of-a-kind look. We used black cardstock to make the eyelashes and cut circles from pink felt to make rosy cheeks. Secure your embellishments with glue and let it dry completely before taking the box to school for a valentine exchange.
