Cut the perfect brownie squares every time using this TikTok knife hack

Love brownies but hate losing half of the ooey-gooeyness on the knife when you cut them?

“Domestic engineer” Jennifer Shoemaker (@mrsshoemaker) shared a brownie-cutting hack that she swears results in “perfect brownie cuts every time.”

The secret is in the knife; Shoemaker swears that swapping a traditional metal knife with a plastic knife is the secret to cutting brownies without the mess and leaving clean lines.

Shoemaker explained that she learned the hack from a catering mentor friend, and while she wasn’t entirely sure why it works, the method has never failed her.

Plastic knives work better than metal knives, explains chef and registered dietitian Julie Harrington, because plastic knives are non-stick. If you use a metal knife to cut brownies, the fudge and chocolate in the brownies will stick to the blade, but plastic allows it to slide right off, resulting in cleaner cuts.

TikToker @taeleighd explained that the plastic knife hack goes way back because she learned it from baking with her grandma.

A commenter on her video also added that some Betty Crocker boxes even suggest that bakers use a plastic knife to cut brownies, so it’s one that even “professionals” use too.

“I learned this on the Betty Crocker box lol. Idk if they still put it but I read it on there,” noted @justinianoadventures.

If you don’t want to use a plastic knife, some people also suggested wiping the brownie knife between each cut to get the same effect.

“Take it from the baker’s and cake decorators, it’s just the build up on the knife with every passing. Clean it every time, you get clean lines,” said @ericthelavender on Shoemaker’s TikTok.

Another option for reducing the brownie mess?

“I just eat them straight out of the pan with a fork,” admitted @thechelseakardokus on Shoemaker’s video.
